Before approaching a community leader to join your Nonprofit Board, make their value-add clear. A successful leader needs a diverse board of people with different experiences, backgrounds, expertises and networks. The prospect must clearly understand how they fit into that mix, the value they bring and the benefit they'll get from joining the board. After all, you should want them for the potential impact they can have on the organization, not just because they are a well-known name. – Forbes / Patrick Riccards, Driving Force Institute #BoardLinX

Belonging is a fundamental human need. As nonprofit leaders, you have the opportunity to cultivate a community around that feeling. By hosting in-person and virtual get-togethers, you can create a space where people feel valued, neighbors get to know each other, and people find commonalities, even if they’re an ocean apart. As a nonprofit leader, I've embraced the importance of community exposure. I love people, especially meeting strangers, listening to their interests, learning about their work, and discovering their passions. I seek out talent and people who excel in their fields. Leaders, are you actively engaged in this process too? Whether you are or not, today's message is an invitation to elevate your leadership within your community. Why? Because you and your organization are needed in ways you can't even imagine. I notice that 9 out of 10 nonprofit leaders, especially Executive Directors, are hiding. Maybe you think you're too busy, or perhaps you believe community exposure isn't for you. If so, consider the consequences... You could be doing fantastic work, but if nobody knows about it, that's a tragedy. You have so much to offer, yet your community is unaware. It's time to change that, and you can do it in your own unique style. To start, develop a strategy to connect with your community... What do they listen to? What do they read? What websites do they visit? What social platforms are they on? There's a place for print, audio, and video. The only thing keeping you from connecting with your community is your list of excuses. I often hear nonprofit leaders say, "I don't have the time" or "I lack expertise." My response? Find the time and get the expertise. You are the only thing standing in your way. Have you checked out Dr. Laura Otten's blog post on the Think Good blog, "Beyond Resolutions: Shifting Perspectives and Creating Possibilities in 2024"? "We have the power to get that boulder to the very top of the hill—and have it stay there. To do so, though, we must change how we think and focus on solutions rather than the problem...."
