On #WorldChocolateDay it is crucial to highlight the need for traceability in the cocoa industry. If you can’t see where the cocoa comes from, you can’t know the conditions the cocoa is grown in, which means you can’t fix any problems that are there! The great news is that traceability has increased significantly because companies are being pushed by regulation from the EU. BUT, there’s still a large gap to full compliance to those regulations. Meridia contributed to a Financial Times article, highlighting the importance of the new EU deforestation regulation to cut carbon emissions from the supply chains of several key commodities and preserve biodiversity. The EUDR is an important step towards eliminating deforestation from supply chains and improving transparency and traceability - and now is the time to start preparing for compliance. We believe compliance within the set timeline is possible if companies take urgent action to get their data quality to the next level. That is why we provide data quality verification and guidance on improving data quality management. "If we were to boycott palm oil and replace it with one of these alternatives, we would need far more farmland." In her latest book, Not the End of the World, Scottish data scientist Hannah Ritchie dismantles myths and highlights how palm oil, despite criticism, is "an insanely productive plant" that generates more oil per hectare than soybean and coconut. At RSPO, we are committed to sustainable palm oil production, and Ritchie's evidence-based approach underscores the importance of responsible sourcing. ‘African farmers need the latest seeds’ https://lnkd.in/devZSNfJ By Lindi Botha 8 June 2023 Global access to the latest seed technology will play a vital role in food security as climate change increasingly hinders food production. This was the overarching message on the opening day of the International Seed Federation’s (ISF) annual World Seed Congress, which was held this year in Cape Town from 5 to 7 June. The congress is the world’s largest international gathering of seed professionals and the 2023 event took place at a critical moment for global food supply chains, following months of disruption from persistent inflation, climate extremes, and conflict. Speaking at a media conference, Michael Keller, secretary-general of the ISF, said that quality seed could help address some of the world’s most pressing challenges, but only if the seeds reached the farmers. What addresses climate risk quicker, competition or collaboration? Harvard Business Review’s latest article explores how GSI members choose collaboration over competition to foster a more climate-resilient future. Recognizing our unique, pre-competitive model, and how it can be applied to other sectors to motivate change at the speed and scale required to address pressing global environmental challenges. GSI has been using this model over the last decade to make measurable progress in the sustainability of salmon farming. https://lnkd.in/g-7ShDNQ #collaboration #sustainability #salmonfarming

Earlier this week on his podcast "Unconfuse Me," Bill Gates spoke up about how many people don't realize that a major contribution to global heating is fertilizer and cows. The Cool Down's article reads, "With nearly 144 billion pounds (72 million tons) of beef and buffalo meat eaten worldwide in 2018, per The World Counts, it’s clear the need for cows is vital for the global food supply chain — and that moving away from meat would provide huge environmental benefits. The number of cows in the world is high because of demand for meat and dairy, rather than what cow populations would be without human intervention." Pick of the Day It seems unjust to expect countries to halt deforestation without compensating them for the significant benefits their forests offer in terms of carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. The primary contributors to climate change are the developed nations, raising the question: Why should countries like Congo bear the costs of our historical actions? Earlier this week, I shared insights on LinkedIn in an article titled "Ashes to Ashes: Decoding the Impact of a Decade's Forest Fires" (t.ly/2LdYv), highlighting these critical issues. Additionally, it's problematic when major Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) companies set carbon emission standards for their suppliers without offering financial incentives. This is especially notable considering consumers often pay a premium for organic products. #sustainability #deforestation #climatechange #carboncapture #palmoil

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) presents an opportunity to drive equality within food systems, with true traceability and emphasis on companies to avoid deforestation. However, there's potential for smallholders to face more burdens and income loss. In our co-creation workshop organised in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and International Coffee Organization, we will dive deep into the world of deforestation-free value chains and explore how data-driven solutions can empower smallholder farmers and drive sustainable change in the coffee industry under EUDR. 🌍☕ Date: 16th and 17th May #Deforestation-free #ValueChains #EUDR #CoCreating #DataDrivenSolutions #TransitionToSustainability
