Despite years and years of talking, voluntary commitments and projects by companies, #cocoa farmers are still earning extreme poverty wages: most earn as little as $2 a day, less than the price of many chocolate bars. All this while chocolate companies have been making billions of profits. It’s not rocket science: farmers will continue to be poor so long as they are poorly paid. UN Secretary-General emphasized that broken food systems are a result of choices, not inevitabilities, urging investment in sustainable food systems to support smallholder farmers who produce a third of the world's food. The Global Citizen Festival campaign highlights the need to aid these farmers for local food production, job creation, and climate adaptation. Russia-Ukraine conflict damaged food systems, pushing hunger levels higher, and a third of produced food globally goes to waste. Women face higher food insecurity, and Africa's potential as a food source contrasts with its high hunger rates. According to a recent survey, smallholder farmers worldwide are spending US$368 billion annually in efforts to adapt to climate change. This amount vastly surpasses the US$ 57 billion raised during COP 28 of which US$ 7 billion is specifically earmarked for food systems. The gap between the investments made by smallholder farmers and the global community highlights the extent to which their needs are not being met.  How can we bring the necessary resources to those who need it? What are the best policies to have the greatest impact at the lowest cost? Hunger is a global problem that affects millions of people. According to the United Nations, around 735 million people suffered from hunger in 2022 - around 122 million more than in 2019. SDG 2 of the Sustainable Development Goals is to end hunger by 2030 and give all people access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food. But how can we contribute to achieving this goal? One way is to rethink and change our eating habits. For example, we can buy more regional, seasonal and organic products, consume less meat and animal products, avoid food waste and support fair trade. In this way, we can not only protect our health, but also the environment and human rights. What are you doing to fight hunger in the world? Across sub-Saharan Africa, women are the unsung heroes of ensuring food security for their families and communities. They are responsible for about 60 to 80 percent of food production, as well as vital domestic work such as fuel and water provision. Yet, they have little access to or control over natural assets in their communities, such as land, water, and ecological conditions that create opportunities for a better life. This greatly affects their capacity to benefit from cash crops, such as coffee and tea, as the proceeds usually go to the men who own coffee trees and land. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dVQFx5VR
