🙋♀️ That was the RKC 2024: 300 guests, 6 presentations, lots of insights! 🌍 Within the context of a constantly changing global landscape, the interplay between mobility and public health becomes evident. International experts were invited to the Robert Koch Colloquium (RKC) on May 23 and 24, 2024 to discuss the current state of evidence, research questions, but also challenges as well as the next necessary steps for research and practice. The first day focused on the mobility of pathogens and the practices of Public Health in a globalized world: 🔵 Richard Neher presented findings and successes of genome-based surveillance of SARS CoV-2 and influenza. 🔵 Sylvain Brisse reported on the return and spread of vaccine-preventable bacterial diseases such as diphtheria and whooping cough. 🔵 Johanna Hanefeld addressed the diverse connotations of the complex topic of "mobility". She included critical perspectives on the origins and contex tual applicability of global health policies and categories and emphasized that "international health protection is national health protection". The second day treated the diverse needs of mobile populations: 🔵 Éamonn O’Moore stressed that more than 30 million people worldwide move between their communities and prisons annually. Prisons represent a high-risk environment for transmission and amplification of infectious diseases. 🔵 Alistair Story presented the integrated Find and Treat outreach service implemented in London. He pointed out the increasing potential of point of care diagnostics on the street, mobile case management and the use of mobile internet technologies. 🔵 Bernadette Kumar stressed the need for differentiated data on the health of migrants, refugees and ethnic minorities in order to tackle health inequities. 💬 In the final panel discussion, hosted by Jan-Martin Wiarda, Bernadette Kumar, Sylvain Brisse, Anna Kuehne and Viviane Bremer discussed, together with the audience, the impact of increased mobility on public health. 🤝 Over two days, around 100 guests participated in person and about 200 participants took part virtually. The Robert Koch Colloquium came to an end but the inspiring talks and discussions certainly generated new research ideas and cooperations. 📽 You missed the conference? The Global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan (SPRP) for mpox, spanning September 2024 to February 2025, outlines urgent global, regional, and national actions for addressing the mpox emergency. Triggered by a new clade's rapid spread in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring regions, the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency of international concern on 14 August 2024. The plan prioritizes surveillance, research, equitable access to medical countermeasures, and community empowerment, with a six-month focus on controlling acute outbreaks and an estimated budget of US$ 135 million.
