The answer lies in their access to benefits and resources. 🔍 **Key Facts:** - Business and job opportunity scams ranked among the Top 10 frauds reported to the Federal Trade Commission in 2022. - A recent Better Business Bureau report identified job scams as the second-riskiest scam in 2022. 🚨 **Common Job Scams:** Beware of scams offering business or job opportunities, work-from-home schemes, reshipping scams, reselling merchandise scams, fake job ads, and more. Scammers may even pose as "recruiters" on LinkedIn and other job sites. ❌ **How to Spot a Job Scam:** Protect yourself by following these steps recommended by the FTC: 1. Search online for the company or person offering the job, along with keywords like "scam" or "complaint." 2. Verify the legitimacy of the recruiter by checking their company email address and avoiding personal email addresses. 3. Consult trusted individuals about the job offer and ask questions about the job description. 4. Never provide personal information during an interview, and be cautious about sharing sensitive details. 5. Job scams through email and phone can be highly deceptive. Here are some common tactics scammers use: - **Impersonating Real Employers:** Scammers pretend to be recruiters from reputable companies on platforms like LinkedIn or Indeed. They'll contact you, praise your skills, and offer a virtual interview. Afterward, they send an official-looking offer letter but then ask for money or personal information under the guise of "employment paperwork." Legitimate employers do not request upfront fees or personal info. - **Chat Apps or Email Only:** Be cautious if a potential employer insists on communicating solely through chat apps or email. Legitimate employers typically provide a phone number for further communication. - **Malware Installation:** Scammers may schedule interviews to install malware on your device. They might prompt you to download a specific messaging or video conference tool. To protect yourself: - **Research:** Verify the job's legitimacy by contacting the company directly using a known phone number or visiting their official website. - **Avoid Paying Upfront Fees:** Honest employers won't ask for payment for equipment or services. - **Protect Personal Info:** Refrain from sharing sensitive data until you've confirmed the job's authenticity. Job scams increased by 118% last year according to HRD America. I see employment fraud plaguing online job boards including LinkedIn targeting one of our most vulnerable populations – job seekers. Sadly, fake job postings have resulted in hundreds of wasted hours for my clients and others who are enticed by the seemingly perfect job. It can happen to anyone. My best friend, who I consider to be one of the smartest people I know (she has her Masters and is currently pursuing a PhD), got duped last year due to a highly sophisticated and professional hiring process. Common indications of a fake job opening include: -All interactions are over the phone or virtual conferencing, without the camera on. -The position is 100% remote. -The salary and expense reimbursement seem too good to be true. -All communication is through one recruiter who, despite your lack of experience and expertise, thinks that you are a great fit for the job. -They indicate that they are an internal or external recruiter for a company that has a website and LinkedIn company page. -The company has no working phone # associated with it. -The recruiter will not give you their phone number. If you suspect a job opening is a scam, here are some things you can do to validate the authenticity of the position. -Ask the recruiter for their phone number. If they don’t give it to you, you’ve got your answer. -Call the phone # on the contact page of their website. If the voicemail is wonky and you try and try again, but no one answers, you’ve got yourself a job scam. -Google the company name to see if other people are reporting them as illegitimate. Finally, prevent anyone else from being sucked into a fake job by reporting it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov #jobsearchtips #jobseeking
