Concept of HVDC: I intend to break this one in two parts. Part A will tell about basic concept and schemes and Part B about basic layouts. This will have DC power transmission studies, DC protections , breakers , CT, PT sizing, Power Electronics and communication exchange between converter station as part of detailing not included here. The application is broadly in three area 1. Where transmission distance is very very long 2. To connect offshore wind to On shore grid 3. To connect two systems with different frequencies To execute this , we must have thorough knowledge about the selection and gate control of SCR Power Electronics additionally

An HVDC converter station (or simply converter station) is a specialised type of substation which forms the terminal equipment for a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line.[1] It converts direct current to alternating current or the reverse. In addition to the converter, the station usually contains: three-phase alternating current switch gear transformers capacitors or synchronous condensers for reactive power filters for harmonic suppression, and direct current switch gear.

Freelance Protection Relay Engineering Specialist | Web Development Expert | Empowering Engineers with Innovative Learning Tools | 30+ Years of Global Experience
This video by Gaurav J. dives into the key components of HVDC, explaining how they work together in a practical and visual way, without getting lost in technical details. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission is used especially for very long distances where traditional AC systems fall short. Gaurav offers a clear breakdown of the entire process, starting from the AC switchyards to converters and smoothing reactors. For engineers working with power systems or relay protection, understanding HVDC is very useful. The process of converting AC to DC and back again introduces specific technical challenges that directly impact protection schemes and fault management. HVDC systems are more complex and costly than traditional AC setups, required in certain scenarios. If you’re curious or working in this space, I highly recommend checking out this video and follow Gaurav's Youtube channel www.youtube.com/@GauravJ Watch video here: https://lnkd.in/dGKr5EaM #HVDC #EnergyTransmission #PowerSystems #ACDCConversion #GridStability #RelayProtection #ElectricityGrid #EngineeringInsights #PowerTransmission #ElectricGrid
