Over the past two days, I’ve had the enriching experience of diving into the profound impacts of AI on humanity, particularly within the hospitality and tourism sectors. The 'Walk the Talk: AI in Hospitality and Travel' event, expertly co-organized by BAE Ventures, Nova SBE Westmont Institute of Tourism & Hospitality, and hosted at Nova School of Business and Economics, opened my eyes to a new dimension of possibilities and challenges presented by AI. The event was a wealth of information, showcasing an array of AI applications that range from inspiring to daunting. Despite my familiarity with AI, the diversity of use cases presented was astonishing. It’s clear that AI is not just a tool but a transformative force capable of reshaping our industry in ways we are only beginning to comprehend. Generative AI, in particular, is a game-changer, capable of deepening the divide between market leaders and newcomers, and between resource-rich and resource-poor entities. Yet, it also holds the disruptive potential to level the playing field in unexpected ways. The dynamism of AI in shaping the competitive landscape is truly mesmerizing. I am profoundly grateful to the Nova SBE Haddad Entrepreneurship Institute and Nova SBE Westmont Institute of Tourism & Hospitality for the invitation to attend and showcase noytrall. While we might seem like outsiders in the AI space, our commitment to integrating sustainable practices in hospitality operations aligns closely with the need for environmental responsibility in AI applications. Amid the excitement and apprehension, an essential conversation that often goes unaddressed is the environmental impact of AI. The energy required to train and operate AI models is staggering, currently accounting for 2% of global energy demand. With wider adoption, this could soar to levels comparable to the current energy consumption of the European Union — about 10 terawatt-hours annually (according to the IEA). This doesn't even account for the substantial water and resources needed to support massive data centers. As we embrace the undeniable benefits of AI, it's crucial to ensure that our advancements in technology do not come at the expense of our planet. Making operations sustainable is more critical than ever. #ArtificialIntelligence #SustainableHospitality #HospitalityTech #Innovation #GreenTech #AIForGood #TechForSustainability #FutureOfTourism
