Executive Chairman and Founder of The Up&Up Group (M&C SAATCHI ABEL, Levergy, Connect, Razor, Black& White and Dalmatian). Patron of The Street Store, the world’s pop-up & free clothing store movement for those in need.
I have worked for just 2 companies over the past 30 years (locally and internationally). Ogilvy part of WPP Sept 1993 - Sept 2008 (15 years) and #MCSaatchiPlc from end Sept 2008 up until now Sept 2023 (15 years and counting +) because I love what I do and who I do it with - in our Worldwide network and M&C Saatchi Group South Africa ( M&C Saatchi Abel Levergy Connect Razor PR ) ❤️ If you are starting your career, choose a great company, with great people, that is customer focused, with an eye on what’s here and now, and an eye on the future. A place that values it’s people and invests in them and the company culture. This modern day, job hopping to simply get ahead and earn more in the moment, is a soulless pursuit in my view, and won’t serve one well. Find your forest, your particular soil, and grow deep interconnecting roots. Never undervalue warm bodies in a room, sparking off one another. Never underestimate the value of human connection, trust, empathy, camaraderie and friendships at work 🙏 You need to stay curious. You need to be a constant student. A learner. And observer. Embrace diversity. Fresh inputs. Read. Watch. Listen. Debate. Travel. You need many inputs. That’s how you stay fresh and relevant. Not simply by moving around.
This is a brilliant outlook, and even though I am in engineering I still believe it holds through. In my view, people who job hop are trading in long term rewards for short term benefits. This may or may not work depending on the individual, but I've seen it go pear shaped for some especially in the start-up space. On the other hand, I've found that if a company is struggling to retain talent, it generally points towards issues with the company and management.
Mike Abel I agree with your emphasis on great people and the value that brings. Just a caveat - I don’t think at the beginning of one’s work journey that one is ideally equipped to discern this. Clarity come with a bit of experience. I think the other thing to keep in mind when choosing one’s initial employment is to choose a company which has a strong learning culture and you can see that you will be learning a great deal , not the company that pays the best.
Great advice but we have to consider times and how things have changed/are changing. This might have worked for you but may vary for the next. This new generation is about the NOW and things progressing at a speed. They’re committed to themselves and loyal to themselves and not companies, quick rise and what value does the company add to their lifestyle? Each to their own.
I love these words ❤️🤞🏾wasn’t easy to find my current job - but my 15 years + starts now 👊🏾
A career is a masterpiece that needs time and true dedication. This is such valuable advice, especially for the younger generation.
This is such good advice... I can attest to this having worked for 2 great companies in my time. The skills, experience and know how you gain is a massive benefit greater than any form of remuneration
I truly respect this.
Love this.
