On the Phase-aligned Transmission Lines of a mmWave 5G Rotman lens Based Beamformer. The #5G technology requires a bandwidth of 100 MHz per channel, or five times that required in #4G #wireless #networks. The 5G RF #spectrum is mainly occupied below 6 GHz, which allows the use of mmWave frequency bands, so. 3GPP developed 5G New Radio (NR) standards to support sub-6 GHz and mmWave frequencies up to 52.6 GHz. This higher frequency band allocation can support very high data rates, while spectrum efficiency can be improved using multiple #antennas at transmitter and receiver (called MIMO). The #MIMO technology operating at #mmWave #frequencies can provide an interesting solution for the requirements of applications operating at 5G and beyond. The #beam #steering in antenna arrays requires active phase shifters, and power dividers require a separate biasing network, which at mmWave is very expensive, lossy and complex. The Rotman #lens significantly reduces the implementation complexity, as phase shifter network elements can be replaced by a passive device (the lens). Extensive research has been done to design Rotman lens for different applications, but there was a gap in analysing the design of transmission lines that connect array ports of a Rotman lens with the antenna array, which is important for accurate and low-loss phase shifting required for the #beamforming. In a 2022 assignment, our researcher Dr Muhammad Ali Babar Abbasi and peers performed an analysis of the effect of phase-aligned transmission line lengths, in terms of the overall losses of Rotman lens based beamformer. They discussed specifically phase and magnitude response of the insertion components of multiple lengths of phase align transmission lines. They showed that by carefully selecting the length of phase align transmission lines of a Rotman lens, better performance in terms of low loss and accurate phase shifting could be achieved.
