Minibatches – filled semiautomatically in isolators When it comes to minibatches of less than 1000 fillings of vials the degree of automation is very low. Depending on the value of the product and the experience of the operator this kind of batch sizes can be done manually or semiautomatic at a certain risk level. If they however need to be done GMP compliant, a barrier system, preferably an isolator. But space inside an isolator is limited – making the footprint of the fill & finish equipment paramount. A combination of a pump (PF 7), vial handling unit (FF 15) and a crimp capper (FS10) only got a footprint of 100 cm/39” x 70 cm/28.6” or in another combination 150 cm/59” x 50 cm/19.7”, which can be accommodated in many standard isolators. At such a configuration the Flexicon fill & finish equipment would only be roughly 12.5% of the overall investment.
