A timely article. An AFP spokesperson has issued a statement to the media, partly in response to the AFPA's Christmas message to members highlighting their right to disconnect over the break. The spokesperson said that any members recalled to duty received appropriate allowances. This was an arguably misleading statement, as it does not acknowledge the environment where members were expected to be contactable via email or phone but not necessarily actually being recalled to duty. The spokesperson also made general reference to the "constructive" bargaining meetings with employee representatives (including the AFPA). This second part of the AFP's statement does not acknowledge the last-minute imposition of an 11.2% salary cap on the AFP's workforce by the federal government, or the ban on bargaining for better allowances and conditions implemented at the same time. Data collected by the AFPA shows that 90% of members would reject the current pay offer from the government, and over 70% had considered leaving the AFP in the last year. 70%. This data is publicly available on the AFPA site. AFPA President Alex Caruana said that it would not be long before the AFP faced a real crisis.
The AFP has the lowest paid police officers in the country and the highest paid commissioner. It starts when recruits come out of the academy and continues. How can they compete for officers against the states. They don’t want a talent drain. #AFPAssociation #police #security #lawenforcement #officers https://lnkd.in/gKVuRF2P

How is police peacekeeping changing? The days of large contingents deploying all at once are now less common. Missions are becoming specialized and police officers provide expertise in areas such as: • serious and organized crime, • community-led policing, and • sexual and gender-based violence. By deploying to specific roles, we are making more of an impact. Here are some glimpses into our deployments over the years. https://lnkd.in/e4EAi8XC

Reflecting on the global trend of police militarization, it's vital to consider its implications on civil liberties and public trust, especially in contexts like Mexico. Research by Kraska demonstrates that militarized police strategies can escalate violence rather than curb it. As professionals in security and justice, how can we ensure that these tactics do not compromise the community relations they aim to protect? What strategies should we consider to balance enforcement with ethical policing? #PublicTrust #EthicalPolicing #PoliceMilitarization #SecurityProfessionals #Mexico #LawEnforcement #CivilLiberties #CommunityRelations #SecurityStrategy #Justice

Correctional Counselor at Federal Bureau of Prisons
