This is the most cutting-edge cartography technology today. Twenty years ago, when I read the preface of Professor Guo Qingsheng's doctoral dissertation “Theories and Methods of Automated Cartographic Generalization”, he mentioned that cartographic generalization might only be approached by gradually solving each local algorithms for individual map features, and that we might never reach a day where the sum of the parts equals the whole. However, with the advent of transformers and large language models (LLMs), this most challenging problem in the field of cartography has seen a breakthrough in an unexpected way.
