Sr. Vice President at BranchPattern | Real Estate Sustainability | Decarbonization | Corporate Governance
Words are tough to find in describing the impact that Ray had on me, so I'll simply recall a story. There are countless out there like this from those he impacted. Twenty-odd years ago, I was a fresh graduate of the University of Nebraska. Freshly outfitted with a degree and energy, I was ready to take on the world. But as a fresh mechanical engineering graduate, I was doing what most find themselves doing - load calculations. It's tedious, but is a critical step in mechanical systems design. One of my first assignments at BranchPattern (formerly M.E. Group) was the Gallup World HQ in Omaha. Designed by Gensler, it has a beautiful curved atrium. To this day, whenever I drive by on trips to Omaha, I think of Ray. In tackling the load calcs for the atrium, I had a choice. The curved wall wasn't truly curved, and the software wouldn't let me input it that way anyway. It was made up of dozens of straight segments, each slightly articulated a few degrees to create the curve. I had a choice - input each wall segment individually, changing the inputs manually to offset the orientation a few degrees. Or, I could dramatically simplify it and make it something like three wall segments. The latter could be done in an hour or two. But the former, that might take a couple of days. I approached Ray and asked him what to do. "I don't know... why don't you try it both ways and see what you get?" So I did. I watched as my early '00s-era desktop chewed on the inputs for hours, then left and came back the next day to find the results. They were the same. Maybe not exactly, but close enough to not matter. In looking back, Ray certainly knew the answer. He could have saved me hours of work, but it was one of the many times Ray gave me the opportunity to learn how to recognize what matters. Not just in the technical work but also in life and caring for others. All of us who spent time with Ray are saddened by this loss, but his impact on the people around him will carry far into the future.
In loving memory of Ray Cederdahl, Co-Founder of BranchPattern https://lnkd.in/g7YqNJvD It is with a profound sense of loss that we pay tribute to Ray Cederdahl, one of the visionaries behind the inception of BranchPattern, who recently passed away. Ray stood as an unwavering advocate for our company's mission, "Improving Life through Better Built Environments®," leaving an indelible mark on our firm for over four decades. A mentor and pillar of strength, Ray shaped the path for many of our engineers, valuing both intelligence and kindness in equal measure. His enthusiasm for his craft and devotion to family filled every aspect of his life, and his zest for living was truly contagious. The impact Ray made on BranchPattern and all those fortunate enough to work alongside him will endure, permeating our company's culture and serving as a constant reminder of our commitment to our purpose. During this challenging time, our heartfelt condolences extend to Ray's family and loved ones. May they find solace in the memories of a remarkable individual whose legacy will forever resonate within the fabric of BranchPattern.
