Recently we hired 15+ employees within a month, making total headcount in the coal mines: 65. While I'm grateful, I felt I was being stretched apart in all directions. After a lot of pondering, I internalized two key lessons. (Except the fact that I have to stop yapping all the time and get some deep work in). FIRST: Without the right systems, every 10 people I add to the org, I get 2x the overhead. No kidding, I started receiving 20+ discord pings every 4 hours. As much as I enjoy being the center of attention, this is just too much. Which is why all my focus right now is replacing broken systems + installing newer ones. (Clarification: having systems doesn't mean you need SOPs for every damn thing under the earth). It's a work in progress but I'm already starting to see positive results. SECOND: If you can't think of anything else, think of incentives. I think Ray Dalio said that? Whoever did, it's a beautiful quote. As you scale, you'll naturally give up areas of control to others. But why should they bother if you're not incentivizing them properly? Thanks Omer Ehtisham for reminding me of this. (The video below is me getting caught out playing cricket. 🌟My daughter was learning about the Canary in the coal mine. 🌟 And it got me thinking. Do I have a Canary in running my business? The phrase "canary in the mine" traces back to the late 19th century, following a tragic explosion in a Welsh coal mine. John Scott Haldane, a pioneering engineer and the "father of oxygen therapy," introduced the idea of using canaries as sentinel species. These birds were carried into mines to detect dangerous gases, such as carbon monoxide. If the canary showed signs of distress, it served as an early warning system for miners. In today's fast-paced, innovative world, having a "canary in the mine" is more relevant than ever. It symbolizes the need for early detection systems in our personal and professional lives, guiding us to anticipate and mitigate risks before they escalate. So, what is your canary in the mine? For me, it's the subtle signals that indicate when things might be going awry. Whether it's a slight dip in customer satisfaction scores, unexpected changes in team morale, or shifts in market trends, these are my early warning signs. By paying close attention to these indicators, I can take proactive steps to address issues, ensuring that my team and projects stay on track. A great reminder that it's how you treat people when you have nothing to gain from them that matters. I was delighted this morning to see that a (former) good contact of mine had started an executive chairman role in a large clean energy business. I was then mortified to see that he had messaged me for a chat about a role a few years ago, and I hadn't responded. Recruiters are notorious for not following up unless there's something in it for us.
