FAST Channels Follow in the Footsteps of Diginets—Broadcast television’s transition from analog to digital signals promised to make way for a variety of new broadcast channels, allowing “multiplex” sub-channels where once only a single linear channel was possible. What emerged was a lot of cheap television, as these new channels were only profitable to operate when content costs were kept as low as possible, a strategy relying heavily on older library content and syndication. Current FAST services are an evolution of this business model. They both thrive on low operating costs, but while Diginets cut costs on the content side, FAST channels minimize their distribution costs, giving them a little more room to invest in content. An Ad Supported Gauge? Nielsen’s latest “Gauge” report added a new feature that broke out the combined amount of TV set viewing attained by major programming companies from either linear or streaming for all of their properties. This had Disney leading the pack with an impressive 11.5 share, followed by YouTube with 9.6%, NBCU 8.9%, Paramount 8.8%, Warner Bros. Discovery 8.1%, Fox 6.1% and Amazon Prime 3.2%. Although this information is welcome, it doesn't distinguish between ad-supported and ad-free content, nor does it separate nationally available TV content from local TV. So, we thought it would be interesting to make some careful estimates and come up with our own “Gauge,” We also decided to take the five leading TV entities (NBCU, Paramount, Disney, Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery) and combine them into one "legacy TV big timers” category. Our findings are presented in this week’s MDI Alert report, “An Ad-Supported Gauge.” Using Nielsen’s findings, plus data from our annual, "TV Dimensions 2024," we show the percentage of total TV set viewing time for persons aged 2+ for broadcast TV, cable and streaming, with some interesting share calculations. We also estimated the commercial clutter levels—to the extent that these are known—for each platform and network type. Finally, we came up with a breakdown for the three most common adult viewer segments, 18-34, 35-54 and 55+.
