Is the new anti-rape bill recently passed by the West Bengal Assembly that proposes life imprisonment for convicted rapists and capital punishment for rape resulting in the death or vegetative state of the victim, special task force to accelerate investigations, dedicated fast track courts etc., the answer to the grave ill infecting our society or will it take so much more than new laws and better enforcement agencies to change this terrible mindset of abuse, manipulation and violence against a thriving life of a woman? I guess no answer is the right response as there are so many dimensions to this historical exploitation. The key issue is what we as human beings can do at our individual levels to address this serious issue that every woman faces once she hits adolescence (or unfortunately even much earlier). I strongly believe that the story of shaping a young mind starts with the family as children learn from watching adults rather than listening to their sermons. So, we need to ask:
are we showing respect to women in our houses,
are their voices being heard,
do they get equal say in decision making regardless of economic dependence,
are they the last one to eat and relax in the family,
are they being talked over by husbands and other family members or being abused or illtreated,
are their mood swings and health issues being addressed well,
do they get to choose what to watch on the TV or the music to play or the vacations to go,
are their dreams and wishes dispensable and without consequence,
are the sons getting preference over the daughters and so many more such questions.
There are so many small and big dynamics in the family that a young boy watches and incorporates while growing up and (coupled with various historic socio-cultural paradigms) either treats a woman at an individual level as a lesser mortal and hence, a dispensable property or a strong influencer in his life that needs to be treated with respect and dignity like any other person. While the state institutions will do what they need to do (or not do), let us take the rights steps of bringing up wise and discerning boys at our homes.
As a women and a mother of two boys, I hope I am doing my due!
