[Meet our doctoral candidates 12/19]   Meet Katharina Z., a doctoral candidate at the Department of Chemical Engineering - NTNU, supervised by Sulalit Bandyopadhyay (Department of Chemical Engineering - NTNU), John de Mello (Department of Chemistry) and Ethayaraja Mani (Indian Institute of Technology, Madras).    She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Technische Universität Dresden in Chemistry. While studying, she was a synthesis student assistant at the Chair of Inorganic Molecular Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry, working on synthesis of phosphorous containing molecules as well as #MOFs and hydrophilization of active carbon for #supercapacitor applications. During her studies for the master’s degree in August 2018, she went on exchange to Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), where she was specializing on nanotechnology, also conducting specialization project at the Department of Material Science - NTNU. Further, Katharina pursued her Master's thesis work at the Department of Physics - NTNU, under the supervision of Alexander Eychmüller (TU Dresden) and Pawel Sikorski, before joining IKP as PhD candidate in September 2020.     Her PhD project is solid #gold - at least in the core. She is researching the growth of #anisotropic gold nanoparticles and how different reaction conditions like binary #surfactant mixtures, reducing agents, or the #pH can influence the process at a fundamental level. "Like highways, a wide, open macroporosity facilitates the diffusion of reactive species within materials, increasing the probability of contact with a catalytic active site and the diffusion of products out of the material, thereby reducing the formation of undesirable co-products. In addition, the pressure gradient between upstream and downstream of these materials is negligible, avoiding any internal overpressure problems. Porous metallic and ceramic foams are therefore widely used as catalyst supports, particularly in continuous-flow applications. As part of this thesis on the preparation of glass foam supports for catalysis, several catalytic systems will be studied with the aim of generalizing the approach developed. In particular, 1/ titanium (TiO2), copper (CuO) and iron (Fe2O3) oxides will be studied for the (photo)catalytic degradation of polluting organic compounds in water, 2/ titanium (TiO2) and copper (CuO) oxides for the catalytic degradation of viruses, and 3/ all of these oxides for the capture of radioactive species. Catalysis supports will take the form of glass foams (also known as cellular glass). These are made from glass cullet and a foaming agent in the form of carbonates, carbides or metal oxides such as MnO2. The decomposition of these agents will lead to the formation of a gas by heat treatment and thus to the formation of pores in the glass structure. It is into this porosity that the above-mentioned particles will be introduced by impregnation. The student, fully funded by the University of Lille, will be supervised by François Méar (thesis director) and researchers Lionel Montagne (UCCS, glasses & NMR), Jérémy Dhainaut (UCCS, macroporous materials and environment), Christophe Volkringer (UCCS, radionuclide adsorption and virucidal properties) and Justine Criquet (LASIRE, reactivity in water). Geographically, the PhD student will be based on the Cité Scientifique campus of the University of Lille. He/she will be able to benefit from existing facilities adapted to the project, and from previously acquired expertise in the fields of materials synthesis, catalyst preparation, environmental catalysis and water depollution."

PhD Fellowship in Chemistry A PhD Fellowship in Chemistry is available in the Catalysis and Sustainable Group (https://lnkd.in/gapjrWRQ) at the Basque Center for Macromolecular Design and Engineering, POLYMAT Fundazioa (www.polymat.eu) in collaboration with an industrial partner. The focus of this PhD thesis will be in valorization of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) using innovative approaches.

🧑🔬 PhD projects in 2025 Photoinduced electron transfer and charge separation is one of the most important phenomena in Universe. It plays an important role in processes essential for life, such as photosynthesis, respiration, protein folding and biocatalysis. It is also highly relevant for solar cells, batteries, molecular electronics and smart materials. The thesis will focus on development of systems for reversible charge transfer between two redox-active centres. The transfer of charge will be in both directions controlled by photoinduced electron transfer and both states will be stabilized by follow-up chemical reaction (intramolecular cyclization, protonation and others). Reversible photoinduced electron transfer will be used for dipole reorientation, control of charges and counterions and regulation of electrostatic interactions. These unique properties will be further used in design of novel materials and devices in molecular electronics. The candidate will perform synthesis and characterization of organic redox-active molecules and will study their properties. Highly motivated and skilful candidate will have the opportunity to extend his/her graduate training in physical and organic chemistry by learning electrochemical, photochemical and advanced spectroscopic methods.
