"Larry's" firm just laid off hundreds of Field Technicians. Their jobs were outsourced to a 3rd party. The way employees found out they were let go was via lists posted on an internal site: If your name was on the list A, you were laid off immediately. If you were on list B, you were laid off, effective 3 days later. If you were not on the list at all, Larry's manager said, "Your job is safe." Lies. I warned Larry to expect every day to be his last. I've this movie a zillion times and have been in the movie, too. Larry controls the following: His resume hotness; his professional accomplishments, his job hunt strategies, his interviewing talents, his relationship-building, his belief in his awesomeness and value. Your job "safety" is always be looking (ABL) for your next ex-job.To control what you control. Larry has 2 interviews this week and 2 next week. He'll get another job. Job seekers, it's time to take another look at that résumé! Tip of the day: Take the time to describe your job responsibilities. For example, machine operation could be defined in many different ways, but as a recruiter, I want to know what types of machines you have used. Forklift? Backhoe? Manufacturing equipment? List your responsibilities clearly for each position in your work history, and don't be afraid to brag on your accomplishments. This will give recruiters a clearer picture of whether your experience may be a good fit for their open positions and will increase your chances of getting an interview for the right job! Examples:

I didn't have to interview for my biggest promotion ever. My boss quit. I wanted the superintendent job more than anything. But instead of asking me to apply & interview.. The man who was about to be my new boss: ⚪ went to the control room. ⚪ pulled up a chair. ⚪ asked my operators if they wanted me for the job. ⚪ asked the other salaried staff the same thing ⚪ came to my office. ✳️ told me I'd have an offer by the end of the day. If there is ONE thing I stress over and over to clients.. It's the importance of building relationships in a way that establishes INFLUENCE, AUTHORITY, RESPECT, ADMIRATION. How? It's pretty simple. Spend most of your time here: Hourly operators. Maintenance. Fork truck drivers. Storeroom workers. If you don't build relationships with the backbone of your plant/site/office.. You will never be able to lead them. -> Maybe you think you have nothing in common - I did. -> Maybe you're bad at small talk - I was. But people are people. Everyone has something they care about.
