Last week I wrote about how I like modified gold bumping processes to for biocompatible flex circuits.  This got me thinking about how great it is to self-align with vias or patterned seeds.  Thinking about gold plating, my mind usually goes to the topic of cyanide in gold plating. It might seem like an obvious solution to just shift to a non-cyanide process.  The problem is that cyanide based gold plating have certain mechanical properties that you might not be able to achieve with cyanide-free gold, looking at the overall process integration.  Also, just because we remove cyanide, it doesn’t mean that we have made the post plating cleans easier, for biocompatibility.  All of these electrochemcial processes are nasty for the human body.
