Summer of Swiping Right: Internship Edition (Lessons Learned as a corporate girlie) 👩🏻💻 Episode 1: The One Where Vedanti Mastered the Art of the Water Cooler ✨ This summer internship episode was like living in a real-life Friends episode, except instead of Central Perk, the hangout spot was the water cooler (hydration is key, people!)😋. It took some initial awkwardness, let me tell you. But within a few days I went from “hello, i’m Vedanti and you are🙋🏻♀️?” to “OMG, she said that😳????” Turns out, those casual chats by the water cooler weren't just about gossip (although, let's be real, there were some juicy tidbits🤫). They were gems of hidden knowledge! From industry hacks to unspoken office norms, my colleagues were guiding me through the hacks of the professional world that put me far ahead in my career than taking up a personal branding workshop ever could💁🏻♀️. They weren't just there to offer a friendly ear, but to share industry details that you won't find in any training manual.📑 The constant flow of conversation (and the strategically placed water cooler where no one could hear us, I might add) kept me fueled and engaged. Today, I listen better, participate more and know exactly why things are the way they are🤳🏻. It turns out, some of the most important lessons don't come from textbooks or lectures, but from the everyday interactions that also help you hydrate better. It's a win-win, right?💃🏻 Here's to the power of the water cooler! Whether you're diving into your first job or aiming to maximize your experience, remember that every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and make an impact. Here are my top 10 tips to to help you navigate your internship/co-op and make the most out of your summer position: 💼✨ 1. Show Initiative: Don't wait for instructions, seek out opportunities, and contribute ideas that add value to projects. 2. Stay Organized: Keep track of deadlines, meetings, and tasks to ensure you stay on top of your responsibilities. 3. Whether it's gaining specific skills or completing projects, having goals keeps you focused and motivated. 4. Be Professional: Represent the company with integrity. 🔍 𝐍𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐬: 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭 🔍 During my recent store visit as part of my Summer Internship Program, I encountered a situation that left me deeply reflective. While engaging with a shop owner, I was taken aback by their behaviour towards our team. In an unexpected turn, the shop owner resorted to derogatory language, referring to us as "slaves" and displaying loud and confrontational behaviour. 🌟 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 🌟 Encountering such behaviour was undoubtedly jarring, yet it served as a reminder of the importance of professionalism in all situations. Despite the challenging circumstances, our team maintained composure and professionalism throughout the interaction. We remained focused on our objectives and approached the situation with empathy and understanding, recognizing that everyone faces their battles and stresses. 💡 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀💡 While the encounter was unexpected and uncomfortable, it presented valuable lessons and growth opportunities. It reinforced the significance of effective communication, conflict resolution, and maintaining a positive attitude in the face of adversity. Additionally, it highlighted the importance of empathy and understanding in navigating challenging interactions, as we never truly know what someone else may be going through. 🚀 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲 🚀 As we continue our journey through the Summer Internship Program, this experience serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience and grace required to navigate the professional world. It underscores the importance of upholding values of respect, integrity, and professionalism in all our interactions, regardless of the challenges we may encounter. 🌱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌱 I invite fellow interns and professionals alike to share their experiences and insights on navigating challenging situations in the workplace.
