BMW plans to invest hundreds of millions of pounds in its Mini factory in preparation for the new electric car models.
The £600 million investment will involve updating the Cowley plant, extending production lines, building a battery installation area, and constructing additional logistics facilities at both Cowley and Swindon. Between the Cowley and Swindon factories, BMW already employs 4,000 workers, creating thousands more job opportunities due to this new production line.
The Mini brand is expected to be fully electric by 2030; this shift has come about in anticipation of the ban on the sale of petrol cars in 2035. This investment in the fast development of these electric vehicles will require new skills and training to upskill their workforce, making their staff more employable in the long run. In turn, the new jobs made available by the investment will be more desirable to applicants and attract top talent.
The world is pushing for the use of greener, more sustainable energy, moving away from petrol and diesel-reliant modes of transport. Mainstream car brands will fall behind, bringing their workforce with them if they don’t develop with the times. Currently, job security within these companies isn’t guaranteed unless they act fast. Could this investment give other car brands the nudge to move toward green energy? Are you aware of how sustainability in your company could affect job security within your company?
