Fun fact. I wanted to be a teacher when I was younger*. People used to randomly profess to me that I’d make a great teacher (which my ego loved, obviously), and the thought of educating young people and sending them off into the world appealed to the nice bit of me. It is a career dream I held onto for years, and in the darker days of my legal career (not whilst working at LP, to be clear) I genuinely considered jacking in law, signing up to the PGCE, and retraining. So why am I telling you this? Because it turns out that I can be both an employment lawyer AND a teacher - hurrah! By very cleverly disguising teaching as training (granted, it’s not that cunning, but no one seems to have noticed, yet), I get to swan around the country and teach (train) my lovely clients and their staff about a whole manner of things. This afternoon I am teaching my very own team, which is extra specially exciting. There are a zillion changes being introduced in the employment law world this year, and today my team will come together, learn them, and, most crucially, discuss our strategy for making those changes work to our clients’ advantages on a practical level, and plot out how we provide the best clear, commercial, and pragmatic advice around that. No one tells you when you train as a solicitor that actually you won’t be forever reading cases about snails in beer, or spending every hour pouring over 100 page contracts. You can do that if you want, but actually, being a solicitor is largely what you make it - whether that be standing up in court (like Howard Catherall MILT) doing deals around an F1 track (a la Dan Chapman) or visiting farms to look at cows (looking at you, Alison Beales and Julia Routledge). Today, I’m making it being a teacher. #training #teaching #changeiscoming *Other career goals included interior designer, psychologist, and musician in the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Never a lawyer. Don’t tell anyone.

Some of you might be attending today's Legal Cheek Virtual pupillage fair and are perhaps confused regarding what questions to ask from individuals representing those chambers you are considering applying. Here is a list of 9 questions you can ask: (1) How would you describe the culture and working environment within the (2) chambers? (3) What type of work can pupils expect to be involved in during their time at the chambers? (4) How is pupil supervision and feedback handled within the chambers? Are there specific qualities or experiences that stand out in successful applicants? (5) What opportunities are available for career progression after completing pupillage? (6) How does the chambers support the professional development of junior barristers? (7) Can you describe the support system for barristers in terms of ongoing education and career guidance? (8) What initiatives does the chambers have in place to promote diversity and inclusion? (9)How does the chambers ensure a supportive and inclusive environment for all members, regardless of background or identity?

Meet team member Carol Goolsby, Legal Assistant. What is your favorite meal: Chana masala with garlic naan. If you could have a conversation with anyone living or dead, who would it be and why: Al Gore. I would like to speak with him about how I can personally promote climate change initiates and strategies to inspire more people to get and stay involved in conservation efforts in their communities. Do you have any unique talents: I am left-handed but meagerly play musical instruments and perform certain sports activities with my right hand. What is your top bucket list item: I want to be able to be a part of conservation efforts that, over decades, lead to strength and increased variability in our local food-webs. I want to watch the growth of swamp white oaks over decades and what a native oak woodland would have looked like during Pre-Colonial times. What is your favorite part about working at Zayed Law Offices: I really enjoy speaking to clients and hopefully providing some comfort and clarity during a time in their lives that is very difficult and hard to navigate. What is your biggest accomplishment at Zayed Law Offices: I don't gauge my worth or success by finite points in time or singular events. I'm grateful to be part of a team of great people who work hard to fight for our clients during their time of need, every day. Where did you attend college: Joliet Junior College and Lewis University #teamwork #team #ZLO #career #dreamteam
