THIS is what it means to start making clothes in the U.S. Mallory Ottariano lives and breathes transparency, vulnerability, and purpose. I happen to know that her posting here on LinkedIn is rare -- it is for our benefit, not hers. Her team actually sells product every time she posts on Instagram and TikTok, you know, where there are BUYERS (not so much Linkedin). And yet. She makes time out of her huge day to show us what's behind the scenes. I'm grateful, I hope you are. It is fascinating. And there's two things you can do right now. First, re-post this. You don't have to comment or endorse, but make sure YOUR network sees it. A "Like" doesn't do much. Second, buy something. If these clothes aren't for you, find someone who would love them. Buy it for them. Not "some day", but right now. Really, the solution is right in front of our faces. Buy. The. Products. Mallory and crew are doing the hard thing. You can do the easy thing. "what the hell was I thinking starting this, can we really do this?" These thoughts swirled around my head in March of 2023 on a 15 hour drive to Colorado, stressed about being away after starting a "factory" at Youer®. And yes, then it was just an air quote factory. Our sewing labor was made up of me and Sarah Cabral in our ‘spare time’, and Vicky who worked 5pm-10pm after working her other full-time job (today she’s our Production Floor Supervisor). I’d work 7am-10pm and question all day long if this was the right idea as we struggled through our first batch of croptops- the simplest thing in our collection. On the road, I thought deeply about why I wanted this. The motivation was enormous loss of valuable product and materials to countless production mistakes at our partner facilities over the last decade. I knew for our future to exist, we would need to be vertically integrated. And all of this was part of the process. One year later, we’re now a team of 8 wrapping up production of a batch of Superpower Blazers – the most technical piece in our collection. We’ve made 1000 pieces of clothing in here so far this year, and our Youniverse is buzzing with nearly a dozen machines and lively conversation between teammates over an instrumental playlist of Celtic lute. The strides we’ve made in the last year are pretty astounding when I step back and look at it (which I’m trying to do more often). We’ve hired 9 people (with some ebbs and flows to make 8 today), acquired some fancy equipment, written policies, established protocols, created a language we gather data from and a set of digital tools that help us track and improve. We’re small, and only making half of our product here (the rest remains in CA) but our success this year has been against some serious odds. In the last year, 21 American factories have closed (David Billstrom keeps me updated). Which makes we wonder if we’re doing the right thing. Are we about to come up against some serious odds that are going to make this endeavor impossible? Are we naïve to the challenges we’re yet to face? Maybe! But for now, we’re trying our best and re-engineering the way we do things with every new milestone.

As manufacturing continues to grapple with volume related layoffs, it highlights 2 major questions... 👇 1) How long where they hedging their bets before they had to layoff, and what was that dollarized loss? 2) If you could scale labor up and down with demand and avoid that loss what optionality would that give your business in this environment? This is the operational and financial agility Veryable enables for our business users, and the kinds of problems we are helping them solve for. #manufacturing #laborproductivity #ondemandlabor #operationalexcellence #distribution
John Deere has announced that it will be cutting 34 employees at the Moline Cylinder Works, effective the end of May. The company stated the move is necessary to balance the size of its workforce with the amount of production. Unfortunately, this is the third round of layoffs for Deere this year, with over 460 employees being laid off in Waterloo and Ankeny, Iowa, in March. #JohnDeere #steeleconomy #TrinityProducts

Lots of layoffs hitting counties surrounding the core of the Research Triangle ... a quick rundown (and shoutout to North Carolina Department of Commerce for maintaining a wonderful WARN database and being very quick to respond to records requests): -GKN Automotive is consolidating its North American operations and, in the process, closing its plant in Person County, NC Government. Half of the 475 employees at the plant will have the opportunity to transfer to the company's plant in Alamance County Government. Those who cannot or do not transfer will be laid off. Story: https://lnkd.in/esidy4Kt -Jacobs, after losing out on a new multi-billion-dollar United States Department of Defense Special Operations Forces IT Enterprise Contract (SITEC), is laying off 240 workers at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) in Cumberland County, NC. Story: https://lnkd.in/eX98Z79V Lauren Ohnesorge and I follow WARN notices closely for Triangle Business Journal. Many more layoff WARN notices have been filed this year so far (19) versus the same time period last year (12). We'll see if this pace slows down. #trianglenc #layoffs #manufacturing #military #jobs

Just a kid from Akron I mean Cleveland, OH who continues to strive to be the best in the 3PL space. Today marks my 20th year anniversary/milestone in the supply chain industry. What a time to reflect! Twenty years ago I moved from Ohio (gods country) to Illinois without much knowledge of “trucking” or what my future would hold. On my first day, failing a map test in under 90 seconds/learning short cuts on a keyboard, made me question if this was the right job for me. Now, twenty years later I am still improving and learning daily. I have been surrounded by some of the most incredible people in logistics, working in 5 different offices and only 2 companies during the run. I have crossed paths with some of the best of the best and learned from all of the partnerships over the past 20 years. Some I still consider my closest friends or competitors. It is hard to thank everyone as I assume LinkedIn stops allowing me to “tag people” so I will just say thank you. Thank you to all the mentors, coaches, friends, customers, carriers, and family members, who have helped and pushed me. I have so much gratitude for your support, guidance and resilience over the past two decades and for being with me around every twist and turn. The industry continues to welcome new challengers, tech, believers and dreamers. Those who have been through the cycles know that there is always tomorrow. As a service provider, it is our job to create solutions while ensuring our exceptional customer experiences. I look forward to and welcome the challenges in the market and can’t wait to see what my 40-year anniversary recap is about. Cheers! #highperformance #milestoneachievement #3PLkeepsyouyoung #TRAFFIX #hiring
