There is an update to EU regulations regarding Antifreeze & Coolant from today, 23rd November. What is the update? Any Organic Acid Technology (OAT) based Antifreeze & Coolant that contains greater than 0.3% w/w of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid (2-EH) cannot be sold to the general public in the EU. This means that Millers Oils Alpine Red, Yellow and Lilac Antifreeze & Coolants are all affected. However, any product that uses 2-EH can still be sold to professional users provided the label clearly states “For professional use only”. Why is there an update? The EU Commission has reclassified some chemicals to make Antifreeze & Coolant products safer for the general public. A review has been conducted for these substances to be added to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern and to Annex XIV of REACH (the Authorisation List). Why does Millers Oils use 2-EH? 2-EH is an excellent corrosion inhibitor, allowing for long lasting Antifreeze & Coolant products, providing more than a decade of corrosion protection. Does this affect you? The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has not implemented this legislation, so there is no formulation change until it becomes a mandatory requirement in the UK. The labelling for Millers Oils' Antifreeze & Coolant will be updated for export to the EU to ensure compliance, pending a revised formulation.
