Without any special equipment—no headphones, special glasses, or lenses—he competed with his hands in his pockets. This exceptional marksman clinched the Olympic silver medal in the 10-meter air pistol event. His story is a powerful reminder that #confidence and #selfbelief are key to achieving greatness. Re-watching Band of Brothers for the umpteenth time and these are some takeaways I had from this viewing. Lieutenant Winters exemplifies quiet servant leadership by holding his company accountable while treating them with dignity and respect. Throughout boot camp, Winters motivates the young men through the challenges, pushing them hard to prepare for war. He is soon entrusted with command of Easy Company, leading them through WWII and turning them into one of the most decorated units of the war. Tips for Servant Leadership from Lieutenant Winters: 1.) Prioritize the needs of your team over your own. 2.) Understand the goal and its impact on the team, both positive and negative. 3.) Be confidently decisive. 4.) Be ready to make difficult decisions. 5.) Be prepared to take responsibility for your team, regardless of the situation. 6.) Lead from the front and work alongside your team. 7.) Recognize and respect the human dignity of each team member to bring out their best. #BandofBrothers

Good leadership matters…A LOT! I will continue to contend that America’s businesses and communities, at-large, are greatly underutilizing the unique leadership talent and experiences that military veterans have to offer. The Orlando Pride are a great example of what can happen when a veteran is hired to lead the way. A little background. The Orlando Pride is a professional women’s soccer team in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). 2021 and 2022 were some tough years for the NWSL and Orlando Pride with widespread allegations of abuse and misconduct. Things were in a bad place for the Pride at the end of the 2022 season - they finished in 10th place and the head coach and a top assistant were fired due to the allegations. Change was needed. Good leadership was needed. In January 2023, the Pride hired Marine veteran Haley Carter, JD/MBA as their VP of Soccer Operations and General Manager. When I had a chance to connect with Haley and offer congratulations on the role, I mentioned the difficult situation she was taking on. Her response, “It’s why they hired a Marine.” And this decision is definitely paying off for the Pride. They finished the 2023 season in 7th place, just missing a spot in the playoffs due to goal differential. With the 2024 season nearing the halfway point, they are one of just two teams without a loss and are currently in 2nd place, only trailing by goal differential. Now, it’s important to point out that Haley has her own soccer pedigree - she’s not a fish out of water in the NWSL. But I don’t think she’d hesitate to say that it’s her United States Marine Corps pedigree that readied her for the complex and difficult task to right the ship for the Pride. Thanks for being a shining example Haley! I hope more companies and communities are taking notice of what veterans can do in leadership roles. #veterans #leadership #service #sacrifice

Part of being a leader is developing your decision-making skills. You will never have perfect information, but you have to have a way to measure how to make those decisions. When I was a young Captain in 1995 in Okinawa, Japan, Colonel Aaron X. Butler gave me some advice that still serves me well to this day.
