I saw something the other day that had the name of my first law firm boss on it. I started doing the math and realized my first law firm job was 21 years ago! I started at his firm as a week-long, temporary receptionist and turned it into a part time legal assistant gig for my senior year of high school. I’ve been in the legal field in some way for over two decades now, and am wrapping up my 11th year of practice as an attorney. The biggest things I’ve learned? -have a thick skin. It’s a stressful field and you can’t take everything personally. BUT -know when your boundaries are crossed and stand up for yourself. As a receptionist/runner/paralegal/attorney, half of your value is in your judgment and ability to reason. If something doesn’t feel right, address it appropriately. -time is money, literally… but that doesn’t mean your life belongs to your job. Work to live but don’t live to work. -stay excited! I very recently got to do something at work I’ve never done before, and I was absolutely hyped about it. Find something that brings you joy and interest and ask your bosses/team to support you. If you’re at a good place, they will support you. - finding your career place can take some time, trial, and error. You’ll know when you find it. You’ll feel at home when you’re at work, and you won’t dread going to the office (or computer if you work remote) What major thing(s) have you learned over the course of your career?

JUST For such a small word its use in the following context is loaded: “JUST a receptionist” “JUST a secretary” If it weren’t for wonderful/knowledgeable receptionists and secretaries, I JUST wouldn’t have been able to do my new job these past few weeks. 😊When I was going out to visit seven offices, who did I contact first to find out the best day to attend, for directions, for parking, for the names of other staff to meet? 😊When I wanted to know the main queries potential clients ask when they walk in/phone, who did I ask? 😊When I needed help opening a new file on a new system I’ve never used before who did I ask? 😊When I needed help with time recording who did I ask? The women I have met over the past couple of weeks have been knowledgeable, kind and amenable to answering my many, and there have been many, questions! They are the glue that holds everything together and I for one would have had a much harder time settling in without them. So, this is a thank you to you all. JUST keep being fabulous, I'd be lost without you and wouldn't be able to do my job. Also, a massive thank you to our wonderful trainee solicitor in our team Isabella Stylianou whose support has been invaluable. #legalprofession #teamwork

Happy Administrative Professionals Day! I am a big list builder to ensure I can prioritize effectively. I am also selective about which tasks I choose to undertake at certain times of day to maximize my productivity. Before we undertake searches at Marsden, our private practice team spends a lot of time researching and analysing the talent pools in all of the major global legal centres. When we look top tier transactional lawyers who commenced their legal careers in 2019 or earlier, there are very few with just one firm on their CV. What does that tell us? 1. The people who haven't yet changed firm at this level have something pretty good going on with their current firm. They are not likely to move unless they have a reason to – such as progression being blocked, or a similar ‘push factor’. 2. Firms targeting first-time movers need to approach them in a targeted, bespoke way, and with a very appealing and well thought through proposition. 3. Law firms and hiring partners need to be much more open to recruiting lawyers who have moved firms before. As global markets heat up and the demand for top-tier transactional lawyers increases, talent pools will shrink. Excluding lawyers from interview shortlists on the basis that they have moved firms could prove counter-productive. 4. It's more usual that younger lawyers don't subscribe to the ‘one firm for life’ mantra. In line with other industries, legal careers will be more fluid in the future.
