Spread across 35 mines, this achievement underscores the state's pivotal role in fueling the nation's energy needs. Behind this remarkable production are the 2,980 dedicated surface miners, whose hard work and expertise not only drive the industry forward but also sustain livelihoods. Their efforts account for a substantial $247 million in annual wages, underscoring the economic significance of the mining sector in West Virginia. Moreover, the contributions extend beyond wages, with approximately $40 million in state severance tax collections bolstering vital public services and infrastructure projects statewide. But West Virginia's commitment to responsible mining goes beyond extraction. It extends to the ongoing reclamation efforts that ensure the sustainable utilization of land post-mining. In 2023 alone, final reclamation activities concluded on approximately 7,000 acres of previously mined areas, highlighting the state's dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being. In celebration of #NationalMiningWeek, we’re proud to contribute to Canada’s rich mining heritage with responsible development of Canada’s natural resources. We recently celebrated five years of commercial production at our Lamaque mine in Quebec, which is our lowest GHG-emitting operational mine. Thanks to the great work of Eldorado Gold Québec, we are making positive contributions to the area, through environmental stewardship, proactive community engagement and local hiring with over 80% of our workforce from the local Val-d’Or region. To advance our sustainability performance, we’ve added two electric ore hauling trucks to our operations over the last year. With a maximum hauling capacity of 50 tonnes, the trucks will improve production efficiency, protect health and safety – all while mitigating our greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond our operations, we want to create a positive impact for communities near our mines. In Quebec, we work closely with Indigenous communities on workforce training, skills development and other community priorities. Since 2019, we’ve contributed over $2.5 million through our community investment program in Quebec. Our contributions were made in partnership with community members through our Monitoring Committee, who worked together to prioritize and identify key opportunities for the community. Financial surety instrument for closure - Listen to the video posted by Mining Doc. #mining #mineclosure #financialsurety The IRMA standard (IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance ) includes in its requirements 2.6.4.1 similar provisions for mine reclamation, closure and post-closure, which is considered "critical". This instrument shall be: a) Independently guaranteed, reliable, and readily liquid; b) Reviewed by third-party analysts, using accepted accounting methods, at least every five years or when there is a significant change to the mine plan; c) In place before ground disturbance begins; and d) Sufficient to cover the reclamation and closure expenses for the period until the next financial surety review is completed. However to fully comply with this critical requirement remains a challenge for the mining companies! Check the audit reports issued by IRMA on its webpage - check the comments!
