#BlackHistoryMonth2024 is coming to an end, here is what we accomplished: Trivia with prizes, panels on hard-hitting but important topics like colorism, community-building dance webinars, mobile museums, virtual walks through history, service projects, raising awareness for heart health, and so much more. We built audience with every event. During our final event we had a showing of approximately 150% of our membership!!! (Do not worry we are absolutely working to recruit these people. 😉) This past month has been an inspiring, beautiful, and busy month. I want to end this month by thanking some of my fellow leaders who made this so impactful. This day is a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice for Black Americans. With our offices closed today for Juneteenth, we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to honor and celebrate the importance of all that this day represents. Juneteenth commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. This occurred a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and marks the day that all enslaved people finally learned of their emancipation. While it’s been nearly 200 years since slavery officially came to an end, we recognize that there is still work to be done when it comes to tackling the biases and systemic racism that is still present within our society. Whether it be our work through the The Diversity Marketing Consortium to smaller efforts like yesterday’s catered team lunch from Field Trip Catering, a Black-owned business located in Morningside Heights & Harlem, it is core to who we are at SourceCode to continue supporting, elevating, and celebrating the Black community. We hope that everyone will find their own way to do the same (and, not just today!) whether it be shopping at a local black-owned business, celebrating this vibrant community’s contributions to art and culture through books, movies, or music, or educating yourselves about how to be a better ally and supporter. Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is observed annually on June 19. The day marks the moment in 1865 when the last enslaved people in the U.S. learned they were free, two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has gained broader recognition beyond Black America. People celebrate it through cookouts, barbecues, community service, education panels, and other events. It’s a day to honor Black resilience, independence, and community, expressed through music, food, and ceremony.
