Overthinking, self-doubt, and feelings of guilt can creep in and become overwhelming if left unaddressed. 🚶♂️ As we age, particularly after our forties, the impact of neglecting our mental health can manifest in profound ways: 🌞 Increased Anxiety and Depression Chronic negative thinking can lead to a higher risk of anxiety and depression, making it hard to enjoy life. 🌞 Physical Health Decline Mental health is closely linked to physical health. I am axious. I ruminate that I worry a lot about anxiety, which gives me so much stress. Yesterday, I had an interaction with a brilliant team on "Anxiety to Serenity.". Roughly 301 million people, or an estimated 4% of the global population, have an anxiety disorder. Age group: One survey found that young people are more likely to experience symptoms of anxiety than older adults. In adolescents between 13 and 18 years old, 31.9% are affected by anxiety disorders. (forbes) Anxiety is deeply rooted, unlike stress, and has a different pathway in our brain. Anxiety arises at three different levels and has different structured approaches to overcome them. I shared many of my personal stories and heard many more interesting stories of anxiety and how we react to it. The very first step is self-awareness. Anxiety is felt at the physical level before the mental level. This means that the more you are aware of your bodily sensations, the more you can identify the start of the anxiety cycle before it takes over again. We all have different sensations when we feel anxious. I want you to do this experiment. Next time when you feel anxious, pay attention to your bodily sensations and try to find which body part you feel the most and how it is. Example: I mostly feel pain in my shoulder and feet; pain in my shoulder and feet becomes too heavy, especially in my calf muscles. When you are aware of your bodily sensations as soon as your brain gets into an anxiety cycle -> you can address it with the right tools. When you are ready for your team to explore inside out jounrye of anxious brain, and have these handy tools for your team, managers, and leaders to manage anxiety effectively to perform at their full potential, connect with me. Unwanted situations are inevitable, managing anxiety with rigth tools is achievable. #MentalHealth #Motivation #Authenticity 𝑰𝒕’𝒔 𝑬𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒐𝒓 𝑻𝒉𝒆𝒎 When individuals aren’t loved for who they truly are, they often strive to be liked by everyone. This means never saying no, taking on everything, and being responsible for how others feel. This approach might gain approval, but it won’t lead to genuine connections, as people won’t know the real you. Social expectations pressure us to conform—think like everyone else, dress like everyone else. Founder of Lean Practice, Certified B-Corp | Helping leaders build more profitable organisations that are better for people & planet
I've been more active on LinkedIn lately, sharing my experiences as a founder and about mental health. It's important to normalise discussing mental health, especially among men. We often talk about physical performance issues like sports injuries or fatigue from exercise, but shy away from mentioning mental health struggles like feeling lethargic after travel, anger from stressful workdays anxiety from overworking. We all tend to view physical exertion and its pains as signs of strength and bravery, yet mental health issues are often seen as weaknesses. This perception needs to change. Just as we take pride in our physical endurance, we should also be proud of our mental resilience. Understanding that mental exertion, like physical, takes a toll, is crucial. To grow stronger, muscles need stress and rest. Similarly, our brains require rest to recover from stress. Without it, mental health can deteriorate. We should talk as openly about our mental strains as we do about physical ones. Just like we discuss Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), let's start conversations about our 'Delayed Onset Mental Soreness'. It's time to recognise and respect the mental load we carry. #menshealth #performance #leadership #lean Photo Credit: Photo by Anastase Maragos on Unsplash
