The market isn't dead. It's just brutally specific about what it wants. What I'm seeing in early 2025: ✓ Companies are still getting funded → Money is still flowing → But priorities have shifted dramatically Most designers spend months applying everywhere before stopping to ask: am I clicking on the right things? → While hiring managers are flooded with applications, they still say "we can't find the right people" The important shift happening right now: → In 2021, the status symbol was team size - how fast could you hire? → In 2025, it's efficiency - how much can you deliver with how little? What this means for you: → Stop trying to position yourself for everything → Research who's actually hiring and what they need → Lead with the specific problems you can solve, not generic capabilities Your job isn't to be available for everything. It's to be unavoidable for the right thing. Interesting sign: A few weeks ago I saw a job post which had two requirements. → First: "Experience with AI tools." → Second: "Experience with traditional design tools like Figma." The future came faster than we expected. Position yourself accordingly.
The Paradox of Choice.
It's about focusing on the right opportunities and showcasing the specific value you bring.
I've been seeing conflicting opinions about "generic designers" vs. those who "niche down". Some say that 2025 belongs to the designers who can do a bit of everything because that's where recruiters see the most value. Curious to hear your thoughts on that.
The trick is figuring out what specific problems they're trying to solve
Employers are ultra picky because it's a domino effect of the saturated market. Few years ago, it was hard to find candidates and now with the mass layoffs, the dynamic has shifted to there being so many candidates to choose from, that they can afford to have their pick of the litter and then some. If you only had a few cars to choose from, you will try and prioritize what kind of options each brings and decide from there. But if you had every car under the sun to choose from, you can be ultra picky with every option until you find the exact match you want. Prioritization is now on how precise you can check every one of those boxes. Before it was always normal to say, apply anyway, you don't have to check every box that they looking for.. In todays market you have to check every box, plus extra invisible boxes, and have to be willing to take a lot less pay than market median..
i wonder what those AI tools are!
"Early 2025"? People are still hangover, Trump is not president yet, I would wait a little before concluding anything about where the market is goin'
Mindaugas Petrutis, the job market's getting picky, huh? It's all about that niche expertise now. Gotta play smart
It’s true, the market has evolved, and adaptability is key. Companies are now looking for precision and efficiency rather than a wide skill set. How are you positioning yourself to meet these more specific needs in 2025?
