Aviation Spine Specialist SME Physiotherapist for USN & USMC, SOF, military, & comm air aircrew. Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy. Mitigating spine pain to keep you in the seat.
#WarfighterWednesday Pilots with neck and back pain 💥 The past two days at USN Test Pilot School reiterated that Aviation Athletes are dialed and on point, and simply need a few key tweaks to optimize performance. #flynavy #navalaviation Imagine a world where it’s understood that the body has lines of tension whose sole purpose is to keep the spine still while the limbs do the motion. Consider interventions that keep your subframe (neck and back) steady while your legs and arms carry you to your destination. When it comes to neck and back pain, and pain in general: 💥 we can’t make a muscle longer. That’s been debunked. 💥mobility increases when we have stability of joints that hold one limb to the ground while the other moves. Ease of movement doesn’t mean we need to be longer or pulled on. Flip the scrip to more power and efficiency of motion rather than joints bent into sharp angles or limbs in elongated positions and held. The neck doesn’t like to have us force it into a double chin and the back joints don’t like being pushed into an arch. The spine is meant to work with co-contraction of abdominals, multifidus and many other muscles. 💥The muscles and ligaments of the spine are small because they control small bones that house the spinal cord. They’re designed to prevent significant movement past a certain range. 💥compare the spine to an ankle- we avoid purposely spraining our ankle to IMPROVE function. The same principle applies to the spine joints. Aviation Athletes have a unique job with specific parameters. Their spines deserve a bit of maintenance to keep them in the seat. ♻️repost to spread the word. Fellow at Irregular Warfare Initiative / Associate Professor at Naval Postgraduate School / Applied Design for Innovation
In times of geopolitical turbulence and rapid technological change, increased funding for professional military education and research is critical for success. This should be obvious to all, but belts are tightening across the DoD and "thought leadership" among officers and NCOs across the Joint Force is at risk as budgets for education are static or shrinking. I was just reading Williamson Murray's fantastic chapter on how the US Navy prepared to fight Japan during the interwar period in the edited volume Successful Strategies (Cambridge U Press 2014). It is very relevant for today's challenges. He shows that it was the thinking and research done at Naval education institutions that proved to be critical in winning the war in the Pacific: “the thinking of the prewar period, the innovations in technology, and the intellectual preparation of the officer corps were such that the navy was able initially to improvise and then adapt to the actual conditions of the war that it confronted” (p.282). Additionally, Admiral Nimitz later stated that “the war plans he had inherited at the start of the Second World War had included the shutting down of educational activities at Newport. Instead he had made considerable efforts not only to keep the war college open, but also to increase its intake of officers” (p.295). For our current challenges, it will be the younger generation of military professionals that will steer the United States to safety - but they will not do so without being empowered to study, debate, analyze, and innovate around problems and solutions. It will take real vision and commitment, however, to prioritize, fund and enable these young professionals to do so. Let's hope today's leadership shows the same wisdom as Admiral Nimitz.

30 year Air Force Veteran, mediocre dog walker, bad golfer. I enjoy hanging curveballs, high fiber and good scotch
I was cleaning out my desk today and came across this gem and I thought I would share. For context, my final ‘real” assignment was as the Expeditionary Mission Support Group Chief at Al Dhafra UAE from 2021-2022. We dealt with COVID, the Afghan withdrawal and multiple Houthi missile attacks (that seemed to always happen on Mondays). Despite all of this, and being separated from family for a year, it was one of the best assignments of my career…because of the people. This is my proposed “final Enlisted Performance Report” that was done in jest, but it did remind me of a few pass-alongs. Appraisals are a problem in the military and the civilian sector. In the USAF we constantly tinkered with our appraisal system to combat “inflation”. Yet each time we made a course correction the force would say “hold my beer” and re-inflate it. Having seen appraisals as a HRM in the civilian sector, I can tell you the military isn’t alone in this struggle. Systems can be “perfect" but PEOPLE have to implement them. You will never create a product immune from exploitation; however, where systems fail leadership must fill the void. A system cannot not stand on its own without direction, guidance and accountability from leaders. My attached appraisal is obviously embellished and very over the top, but you’d be surprised how much people will exaggerate about if it mean getting ahead, especially once they discover their leadership isn’t verifying. I once had a discipline case where an individual greatly misrepresented their accomplishments for years (3 bogus degrees along with a multiple phony civilian awards). They received TWO promotions they likely didn’t earn. While this person may seem like an issue, the real problem was the leadership that never validated their accomplishments (it was easy enough, we were able to do it 3 years after the fact). What was the domino effect of deserving people who missed out on promotions due to a lack of leadership involvement? Last thing on this “appraisal”. It really reminded me of an important lesson that I have forgotten since retirement. Never take yourself to seriously and always remember to laugh; life is to short not too 😊 -J For those confused at home, the acronym key to this document is as follows: ECES- Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron OODA- Observe Orient Decide Act EKIA- Enemy Killed in Action HVT- High Value Targets MVT- Medium Value Targets LVT- Low Value Targets PWW- Prestige World Wide MFY- Merica F*ck Yeah CS- Communications Squadron CONS- Contracting Squadron SFS- Security Forces Squadron MM- Missile Monday’s #adab #epr #performancemanagement #leadership #laugh #military #prestigeworldwide #dadquad #promulgate

Defense & Aerospace Project Engineer | Warship Systems Specialist | Expert in Advanced Weapon Integration & Project Management | Driving National Defense Innovations
➡️ Why electric propulsion tech is important for Indian Warships ? Recently Rajnath Singh (Defense Minister of India) visited UK for the purpose to take India-UK relations forward including Defense, Trade & Technology, also to meet the future needs of Indian Warships. Indian warships at present do not have electric propulsion systems. They are currently powered by diesel engines, gas or steam turbines. The Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers of the UK Royal Navy are integrated full electric propulsion vessels. This technology will apply to bigger Indian warships with a displacement of over 6,000 tonnes and thus will be first tested on Landing Platform Docks and next generation destroyers. ➡️ Benefits of Electric propulsion over Diesel engines - 1. Efficiency and Fuel Economy : Electric propulsion systems can be more efficient than traditional mechanical systems. They allow for better control and optimization of power distribution, leading to improved fuel economy and overall efficiency. 2. Reduced Noise and Vibration : Electric propulsion systems are often quieter and generate fewer vibrations compared to traditional propulsion systems. This is crucial for naval vessels, especially submarines, as reduced noise enhances stealth and reduces the chances of detection by adversaries. 3. Versatility and Redundancy : Electric propulsion systems offer greater flexibility in power distribution and can be integrated with various propulsion configurations. This versatility provides naval vessels with enhanced maneuverability and the ability to operate under different conditions. Additionally, electric propulsion systems can have redundancy features, improving the overall reliability of the propulsion system. 4. Environmental Considerations : Electric propulsion is considered more environmentally friendly than conventional propulsion systems, especially if the electricity used is generated from renewable sources. This aligns with global trends toward greener and more sustainable naval operations. 5. Technological Advancements : The advancements in electric propulsion technology, including energy storage and power management, contribute to the modernization of naval fleets. Integrating cutting-edge technology can provide a strategic advantage to navies in terms of operational capabilities. #defense #navalarchitecture #navy #indianarmy #indianairforce #defenseindustry #makeinindia #harkaamdeshkenaam

Replenishment at Sea onboard Indian Navy warships -Life Lessons Learnt Replenishment at Sea (RAS) is a method of transferring fuel, munitions, and stores from one ship to another while under way. The objective of Replenishment at Sea (RAS) is to ensure Warships remain at sea for prolonged periods thereby extending their range & reach for accomplishing the mission. For Warships at sea, fleet tankers and other auxiliary ships serve as primary replenishers . As an Indian Navy Veteran one feels proud when Indian Navy is successfully prosecuting 'Anti Piracy' operations (Operation Sankalp) in Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf. Behind such successful operations at high seas is the sustained Replenishment at Sea (RAS). I am nostalgic, as an Engineer Officer & Commander (E) onboard Indian Navy Warships, had the privilege of being part of several RAS operations. Sea is harsh teacher, mistakes made can be fatal & catastrophic. This apparently routine activity at sea is an epitome of Planning & Execution, Precision, Team work & Focus. During RAS ships not only have to match their speed, officers & sailors onboard the ships have to coordinate the pumping of fuel & transfer stores with clock work precision. The whole activity is 'Man/Machine Symphony at High Seas' and it taught me various Life Lessons such as: - Foundation of excellence is on meticulous planning & preparation - Constant practice & training are essential for achieving precision in execution. As it has been highlighted in our ancient Bharatiya wisdom literature "Yogah Karmasu Kaushalam Samatvam uchayate" - Successful man/machine interface is essential in technology intense environment and can only be achieved by mastering machine domain knowledge - There is no substitute of good Team Work
