The Asiatic Wild Dog, more commonly known as the dhole, is amongst the most ferocious predators roaming the forests of central, southern, and south-eastern Asia. The dhole is a highly social animal, living in large clans without rigid dominance hierarchies. Clans can range from 3 to 12 individuals, though groups of over 40 have been observed. These diurnal wild canids prefer medium to large ungulates, such as chital and sambar deer. https://lnkd.in/g9aeMGf6

A beautiful tribute to the Queen of Tadoba Maya (T-12), as legendary as Machhli and as popular as Collarwali. The writer's story of his "close" encounter with her brought back memories of our own last year when she chose to saunter right behind our gypsy for over 15 minutes as she crossed a meadow. And the unmatched exhilaration we felt as we watched her walk in that Regal, nonchalant way, ignoring the gaping tourists and frenzied photographers. My son, 12 then, didn't utter a sound and literally held his breath for the entire duration of that walk, as did Soni and Sonali. As Gautam clicked a billion photos, including some of the best he's ever taken on so many of his wildlife safaris. The causes of Maya's (possible) death are still unknown, and hopefully we will discover that it was not due to any man-animal conflict. India's forest depletion rate is reaching alarming proportions as we change laws to allow for encroachment and deforestation, leading to huge habitat loss for animals. And, in reserves like Tadoba, over-crowding of tigers and increasing territorial fights. We need true care and concern about our forests and wildlife, and pro-protection (not pro-industry) legislation to save our tigers. Maya's children deserve it.
