Conscious Consumerism and Long-Term Behavior 🌱 Did you know that conscious consumerism has become popular among 66% of all age groups and 75% of millennials in just the past year alone [Morgan Myers, 2023] ? Recent times have seen a surge in conscious consumerism, where buyers increasingly weigh environmental, social, and ethical factors in their purchases, reshaping business practices and consumer behavior [Deloitte, Sustainable Consumer, 2023]. Awareness of issues like climate change drives consumers towards sustainable options [Perera, Chamila R. Environmental values and sustainable consumption. 2024]. From the other side, a demand for transparency in supply chains and ethical practices pushes businesses to adapt. Approximately 30% of consumers ceased buying specific brands or products due to ethical or sustainability issues [Deloitte, Sustainable Consumer, 2023]. Long-Term Effects: Conscious consumerism is poised to transform consumer behavior, nudging businesses towards sustainability and ethics to remain competitive, thus fostering a more sustainable marketplace. Can't wait to dive into this more in person. But I think there are ethical ways of approaching consumers and ‘marketing’ sustainable consumption. Our current model is obviously broken, but we can borrow from the parts that are working to build a sustainable model for the future. Ecomm in resale is important to ensure the consumer can find the style + size they need regardless of geography. Retail is equally important, helping to establish trust. IMO, a successful resale business has both. Maybe ‘ethical marketing’ looks like education and re-training consumers. What if organizations educated us on the *scarcity and urgency* of our planet’s resources? And instead of mentioning popular brands for *social proof* they amplified influential voices in sustainability. And what if they tapped into a consumer’s *reward center* by acknowledging them for ‘doing the right thing’ without attaching any monetary value to the reward. ie. a ‘badge’ to post on their socials (credit), a bright shiny thank you email (a la slot machines), a thank you postcard (who doesn’t love mail), a donation to an environmental fund (altruism)… Or put a *personal* touch on it and let them choose their reward. When given the choice, consumers may surprise us.
I talk a lot about leveraging behavioral science and psychology to guide consumer behavior toward sustainability. Through Beh Sci, we can gain incredible insights into the underlying motivations, biases, and decision-making processes that influence consumer behavior. Understanding the motivations behind consumer choices and the barriers to adopting sustainable practices, like habits, cognitive biases, perceived lack of value, and inconvenience, allows us to create more effective strategies to encourage sustainable consumption, break down the barriers, and make it easier for individuals to embrace sustainability. Ultimately, leveraging behsci allows us to maximize the impact of sustainability initiatives by aligning them with the inherent desires and social dynamics that influence consumer behavior. But what does this look like in practical terms? I received a flyer from thredUP, which strategically utilized the above to influence potential shoppers' decision-making processes and motivate them to make a purchase through marketing. For instance, by mentioning popular brands like Madewell, Anthropologie, and Free People, the message implies their desirability and fashion appeal, triggering the principle of *social proof*, where people tend to follow others' actions, particularly in times of uncertainty. The mention of a limited-time offer ("spring refresh") creates a sense of *scarcity or urgency*. This taps into the psychological principle that people tend to place higher value on items or opportunities that are scarce or limited in availability. The reward of $30 off + free shipping activates the brain's *reward center*, triggering feelings of pleasure associated with receiving a discount. It also serves as an *anchor point* for evaluating the offer's value. Even if you weren't planning to shop, the savings of $30 and the potential to combine this offer with others make the purchase more appealing. Finally, addressing me by name adds a personal touch to the message, making it feel more tailored to your individual preferences. *Personalization* can increase engagement and receptivity to marketing messages. As a psychology nerd, I LOVE TO SEE IT! However... While leveraging psychology can be a powerful tool for moving the needle on sustainability, how can we ensure that it’s done in service of genuine sustainability goals rather than simply perpetuating the status quo of consumption-driven capitalism? Despite the veneer of sustainability, is leveraging behavioral science just a form of greenwashing, where companies use marketing techniques to create a false sense of satisfaction among consumers who believe they're making eco-conscious choices when, in reality, they're still contributing to environmental degradation through unnecessary consumption? How can we leverage the power of behavioral science and psychology to drive consumer action while advocating for responsible and mindful consumption practices? Is this even possible?
