Hot Topic: Video Game Adaptations - The Last of Us and Five Nights at Freddy's have capitalized the most from crossovers, both seeing extensive renewed interest in their games when adaptations launched - The Witcher sees strong, reliable bumps in interest with each new Netflix season or miniseries - Fallout is already seeing notable increases across the game portfolio but likely not to the same degree as The Last of Us or Five Nights at Freddy's - But, of course, not all adaptations will change the course of a game - the Gran Turismo movie, Uncharted movie, and Twisted Metal series did not significantly change interest in the games around launch As a reminder, mindSHARE is a popularity metric composed of search, video, social media, streaming, and player data - an increase in mindSHARE is an increase in market share.

Making use of game's universe for TV show is a great marketing tool, adding an F2P element will sure increase engagement and conversions. Looking forward to utilize The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim universe!
The impact of #fallout TV series to video game sales on Steam. Units sold have gone up c. 800% since the TV show's release. We have seen more success in transmedia in the recent years, with the Last of Us, Mario, Angry Birds, Arcane and more. Yet, Fallout has the potential to be one of the most successful examples to date. ⭐ Firstly, the show itself is incredible. It's got 8.7 on IMDB and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. 💰 Secondly, the Fallout universe is so big, so unique and so "spin-offable". The IP can be a cash cow for the coming decade in games, TV, merch, and, why not a theme park. It can provide much more commercial upside than, say, the Last of Us. 🎮 Finally, it's already got a free to play game where all this increased engagement will result in direct conversion to purchases - another commercial edge over more premium games like the Last of Us. Gen Z Creative Strategist | Data Nerd | Content Producer |#1 Article on Google for "Anime Marketing"
Will video games be the antidote to superhero fatigue? Hollywood sure hopes so, and is making big investments in film/TV adaptations of video game properties. After the bursting of the 2023 Content Bubble, the big studios can no longer firmly rely on legacy IP of yesteryear, like Marvel, Mission Impossible, and Indiana Jones. Warner Bros. is developing a Minecraft movie, Lionsgate has Borderlands, Sony is going with The Legend of Zelda, Netflix is investing in the Bioshock franchise, and Amazon is betting on a Fallout series, set to premiere on April 11th this year. The show has a tall order of capturing the unique blend of grim, goofy, and retrofuturistic elements that define the Fallout universe. Standing in the big studios' way is the decades old "Video Game Curse", a term coined to describe the historically poor performance and reception of video game adaptations in film and TV, often resulting from a failure to capture the essence and appeal of the original games. However, in the last 2 years, we have seen a steady stream of successful video game to film/TV adaptations, like Five Nights at Freddy's and The Last of Us, with many more on the way. Has the “Video Game Curse” finally been lifted? And if so, then how and why now? #videogames #hollywood #adaptation #amazon #fallout
Amazon’s new Fallout trailer looks just like the games: grim, goofy, and gruesome

From Bloomberg: Moviegoers have begun to tire of superheroes after a deluge of comic book films. The Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said in mid-May that the company would cut the number of Marvel Studios films and TV show it releases a year in half, to about two of each. Hollywood, meanwhile, is looking to the video-game industry as the next fertile ground for story ideas. Spurred by hits such as The Super Mario Bros. Movie, dozens of video-game franchises have been optioned or produced for film and television over the last two years, from God of War to Grounded. Many of these adaptations are still in development, but the ones released have found success. Amazon.com Inc.’s recent Fallout series, based on the post-apocalyptic games, has reached 65 million viewers, while the first two Sonic the Hedgehog films have grossed more than $700 million, with a third entry slated for later this year. It’s a two-way street: Sarah Bond, president of Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox Game Studios Publishing division, said at the Bloomberg Technology Summit on Thursday that the Fallout #TV show is leading viewers to engage with the games. Hungry producers have gobbled up the options to both mega-franchises and hit indie games, such as Dredge and the detective role-playing game Disco Elysium. Even games with little to no name recognition have tantalized Hollywood, such as the ancient SEGA action series Golden Axe and El Paso, Elsewhere, a low-budget shooter that has been optioned by the actor LaKeith Stanfield. David A. Gross, author of the FranchiseRe movie newsletter, said that even lesser-known video games are appealing to #film and television producers because they have a narrative already established. “ #Hollywood looks for new stories wherever they can be found,” Gross said. “Those #games might not have as much (intellectual property) asset value, but they still have potential. Video-game adaptations were once a laughing stock thanks to campy 1990s films But the curse has been broken in recent years thanks to critical darlings such as Netflix Inc.’s The Witcher, based on a series of Polish novels and video games, which recently began filming a fourth season. Last year, HBO’s The Last of Us became the first #videogame adaptation to rack up awards, receiving 24 Emmy nominations and winning eight. Prestige #television in particular is fertile ground for video-game adaptations because it allows for the type of side quests and exploration that make games appealing. The historic failure of video-game adaptations may have been largely due to a lack of respect for the source material, which has changed in recent years as filmmaking attracted new generations of people who grew up playing games rather than scoffing at them. #gaming
