DEI as a badge of honor; DEI that also stands for Diligence, Excellence, and Imagination. Leguizamo’s speech calling out under-representation of Latinx talent in the entertainment industry at the Emmys on Sunday night was timely, coming as it did on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month. It is also relevant across industries.
Hispanic Americans are one of the fastest growing groups in the country, but they face pervasive barriers to accessing jobs and economic security. Their median earnings are lower, and they are especially vulnerable to losing their jobs amid economic contractions. Hispanic workers are under-represented in the STEM workforce compared with their share of all workers: they make up 17% of total employment across occupations, but just 8% of all STEM workers. They also experience persistent wage gaps compared with white, non-Hispanic workers.
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich contributions of diverse Hispanic communities across every facet of American life. It is also time to make sure that the Diligence, Excellence, and Imagination they enrich us with get their due in the workplace and beyond.
