Making words make a difference ♦ Communications Engineer ♦ Consultant ♦ University Professor ♦ $100 Million + Revenue for Nonprofits Globally
It's old but interesting. How do nonprofits get big? Sure, more money, but it's not that easy. 📌 They grow more and more reliant on a single source of revenue. Is that all - because that sounds easy!! 📌 80% of revenue is from government/publicly funded grants 📌 Less than 10% comes from individual supporters (i.e. donors, but not the kidney king) 📌 They built their organization and structure around this funding model. Get that - they built their org. around their funding - instead of doing their own thing, their own way and vainly believing funding will come because they're so good at what they do. Check your organizational structure - is it built around your sources of revenue? If not, you'll probably never grow big(ger). What to you think?

Empowering Fundraisers with Real-World Strategies | Live Virtual Workshops for Lasting Donor Connections & Renewed Purpose
Corporations and Nonprofits. A match made in heaven??? The vast majority of companies believe that partnering with reputable nonprofit organizations drives trust, increases their impact and attracts & engages employees. And because of challenges with donor retention and decreased giving, a study found that about 2/3 of nonprofits that don't have a corporate partnership program were considering one, with about half of those deciding to do so. (source: UHY Advisors 2024 Not-For-Profit Trends Report) So the desire is there on both sides. The impact is there on both sides. ❓ Are nonprofits prepared to approach corporations about long-term partnerships? ❓ Are the large, global, big name nonprofits going to corner the market? ❓ What role do company employees play in driving corporate decisions about which causes to support and which nonprofits meet those needs? ❓ Do fundraisers need new training on how to succeed in this paradigm? There's an opportunity. 𝗜'𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗺𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 #𝗻𝗼𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 #𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸. 💡 Dispelling the Myth: How Nonprofits Can Charge Fees for Service and Unlock Financial Sustainability 💡 For too long, a common misconception has held nonprofits back: the belief that charging fees for services is off-limits. At Nexus Nonprofits, we're here to debunk this myth and reveal how fee-for-service programs can be a game-changer for financial sustainability. Here's why fee-for-service programs are a win-win: 1. Financial Sustainability: Diversify your revenue sources and reduce reliance on uncertain grants. Sustainable funding means you can plan for the long term and amplify your impact. 🌟 2. Enhanced Services: Fee-based programs often lead to greater participant engagement and effectiveness, making a tangible difference in your community. 💪 3. Unrestricted Funds: Unlike restricted grants, fee revenue supports staff salaries, overhead costs, and capacity-building, ensuring your nonprofit runs smoothly and grows. 📈 4. Proving Value: Demonstrating financial sustainability through fee-based programs can enhance your appeal to donors and grantors. 💼 5. Accessibility: Maintain inclusivity with fee waivers or sliding scales, ensuring that essential services remain accessible to all. 🤝 6. Strengthening Partnerships: Create opportunities for collaborations with other organizations and businesses, leading to shared resources and new funding streams. 🤝 Ready to explore how fee-for-service can elevate your nonprofit's impact? Dive into our latest blog post to learn more and unlock the potential of this powerful revenue stream. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ema-8PfW #Nonprofit #Fundraising #FinancialSustainability #FeeForService #NonprofitConsulting #NexusNonprofits #Philanthropy

I generally defer to the belief that most people are really smart and capable of handling nuanced information. It's on leaders to initiate difficult discussions but if they do they'll generally find a receptive audience because people respect those who are willing to tackle tough topics. I believe a significant amount of the issue around the overhead myth comes down to leaders being risk averse and unwilling to start these conversations with donors. It isn't donor centric...it's quite the opposite because we're not respecting the Indiviudal agency of donors to challenge their assumptions with new information. Yes, much of the mainstream media stinks when it comes to covering nonprofits and has a biased towards "exposing" scandals that don't exist (like nonprofits "wasting" money on leadership retreats - leadership skills and team bonding don't occur on their own folks) but a significant amount of the overhead problem is a self fulfilling prophecy caused by the industry avoiding the discussion outright. Slowly I sense this narrative is shifting and that has to do with leaders like Pamela Grow (she/her/hers) having the courage to share content like this.

After over 30 years in the nonprofit sector, this is the conclusion I’ve also come to. Small nonprofits simply need to take funding their mission seriously and make an investment in growing a base of general operating support (AKA individual giving). An investment in systems, an investment in solid donor communications, an investment in stewardship. https://lnkd.in/e_inFbun

It is imperative for nonprofits, and those that fund them, to recognize and lean in to investing in capacity, which includes human capital. The social impact sector, also known as the third sector, exists because the public and for-profit sectors are not filling all of the gaps. I urge everyone to invest in general unrestricted operating funds to build sustainable futures for nonprofit staff and improve the community-wide outcomes we are working on.
