Have you been wondering what's going on with the BYU AIA? Our students are currently competing to develop a Machine Learning algorithm that effectively teaches a computer to distinguish between various beverages through image classification. For example: If you take a picture of a Coke bottle, can a computer correctly identify it? Can it be taught to discern different sizes or flavors? Hint (it can). This Wednesday (March 6) at 7pm in room 3714 of the Harold B. Lee Library, we will be hosting the three finalist presentations in our Image Classification Hackathon sponsored by Delicious AI. Come and learn more about how Machine Learning creates Artificial Intelligence and how it is being used to change the world around you!

UKRI Future Leaders Fellow | Principal at Design Research Works | Senior Research Fellow at Imagination Lancaster | Interdisciplinary academic with 10 years experience researching AI and IoT through design
Really amazing news that this work has been recognised. As a side comment, it's amazing how you can go from being rejected by one venue to being awarded 'Best' paper by another - I think it's a reminder that writing/submitting a paper at all is a success and it not being selected for presentation isn't necessarily failure. There's lots going on with this bit of work... - we currently have a researcher working with teachers to try and figure out how to turn Ryelands AI Lab into an accessible package that any school can use. Do you have experience with that and want to share it? Get in touch! - we're employing someone to apply Design Research to exploring hands-on approaches to AI literacy in schools, could that be you? Reach out! - after a recent meeting at DfE it was clear there's a big need for things like Design Research (dynamic, adaptable, nimble, quick-to-respond research approaches) ... however, it was also clear that the intermediate knowledge arising from such projects is not, yet, considered "the highest form of evidence" that government departments require ... I'm fascinated to see how we can progress this last point. How can we integrate Design Research into a research 'stack' that includes the best of all the available approaches, balancing their pros/cons? ... themes that are explored in our film, Permission to Muck About (see https://lnkd.in/dTK9wUnC), which I will be posting about quite a lot soon.. so, buckle up 😀) But, back on the point.. Huge congrats to everyone involved it this project. A well-deserved accolade!
Really chuffed! just found out that my last output with Joseph Lindley's Design Research Works Project won a best paper award at this year's ACM SIGCHI DIS conference. It's a paper on our "Ryelands AI Lab" project, where we have employed a design research methodology to respond to the myriad of questions thrown up by generative AI through an exploratory study with a class of brilliant year 4 (7-9 years old) students... so pleased that the students incredible curiousity and astounding skill development are also acknowledged this way. Find a general primer on the project here: https://lnkd.in/e5ZEyKim And a preprint for the awarded paper here: https://lnkd.in/e--AREad

❗ A top priority topic in the conversational AI industry: quality assurance for AI applications. We create AI agents that continuously test conversational AI products, such as chatbots. Let's improve and redefine your AI quality assurance. Read more below 👇 🤓
In my latest interview, Max Ahrens—formerly an AI researcher at Oxford and the Alan Turing Institute—dives deep into the evolving world of Large Language Models (LLMs). He highlights key bottlenecks. Here’s a snapshot: Hardware Infrastructure Challenges: - The mismatch between existing hardware and the demands of LLMs leads to significant computational costs, particularly for large entities. - Opportunity for Breakthrough: Tailored hardware innovations promise to enhance efficiency and scalability. Software and Operational Security Concerns: - Similar to operating systems, LLMs face security vulnerabilities like prompt injection and data poisoning, necessitating robust defenses. - Need for Robust Frameworks: Ensuring the operational reliability of these AI 'brains' is critical for their widespread application. Be sure to catch his sessions at Chatbot Summit in Berlin 19-24!
