Interesting article in The Star 📰 about the challenges for the #semicon sector in Malaysia Malaysia is one of the world’s top back-end players, made up mainly of an ecosystem of semiconductor packaging, assembly and testing players. It holds 13% of the global market for this segment. However, local firms have yet to move into IC design in a big way. According to the Star Media Group Berhad. Managing Director of Brainport Industries, John Blankendaal was asked his opinion about the ecosystem in Malaysia. Read the article to find out more ⬇️

During our recent UHDI forum we stressed the need for cooperative efforts for developing new electronic packaging materials, equipment and processes. We mentioned collaborative work between Uyemura and Japan's Resonac. Resonac is now promoting its newly expanded Packaging Solution Center for "open innovation through co-creation". The company provides semiconductor materials for the front-end process, back-end process, and substrates as well as dry film photoresists and materials to make PCBs. Hidenori Abe, General Manager of the Electronics Business Headquarters R&D Center, said that industry is now focusing on advanced packaging and mounting technologies in the back-end process, and that Resonac is aiming to strengthen horizontal collaboration (even with competitors) globally to contribute to the early realization of leading-edge packaging technology through co-creation that promotes open innovation. There was a time, not so long ago, when Japanese companies would not sell or service their equipment and technology to companies in foreign countries not owned by Japanese firms. How does collaboration differ from partnering?

Infineon Technologies is making bold moves in the semiconductor industry. Despite reducing or relocating 2,800 jobs, the company is investing €2 billion in a new factory in Kulim, Malaysia, set to deliver its first products this fall. By the end of 2026 or early 2027, the first phase will be fully ramped up, with a second phase potentially expanding the investment up to €5 billion, depending on market conditions. The plant will focus on silicon carbide semiconductors, known for their robustness and efficiency, particularly in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and AI data centers. However, the lower productivity of this material makes the chips more expensive, reflecting their added value in applications requiring smaller, more powerful, or more efficient components. This strategic expansion underscores Infineon’s commitment to innovation, even amid challenging market dynamics.
