"Surviving a hospital discharge isn't the end but a new beginning," were the impactful words of Ralph B. Lilly, M.D., a neurologist who survived a traumatic brain injury. At 44, while waiting at a traffic light on his motorcycle, a drunk driver struck him, changing his life in 1980. In the ICU, his confusion was evident when he questioned, "What’s a hospital? What’s a motorcycle?" This incident profoundly altered his life and his medical practice. Lilly emphasized that while doctors treat brain injuries, the healing touch comes from loved ones. His book, "Second Lives: The Journey of Brain Injury Survivors and Their Healers," co-authored with Diane F. Kramer and finished posthumously with the help of his wife Joyce, narrates his and his patients' journeys. Lilly, after his recovery, delved into behavioral neurology, a field focusing on the behavioral and emotional aspects of brain injury. His 40-year career, spanning from Butler Psychiatric Hospital to private practice, was marked by his empathetic approach and dedication to brain injury patients and their families. His memoir, merging heart and patient stories, offers invaluable insights to survivors, families, and healthcare professionals.
