🐾 MasterZoo's Initiative: Giving Homeless Animals a Family 🐾 At MasterZoo, the largest chain of pet markets in Ukraine, we recognize that we can have the opportunity to influence the problem of homeless animals in Ukraine, which number almost 140,000 nowadays. Together with the charity vector of the group of companies, Suziria Charity, we aim to find integrated and efficient tackling that challenge step by step. 🐾What We Do: Alongside supporting animal shelters, we've pioneered an adoption program and aim to connect homeless animals with loving families. In this project, our stores become the place that allows potential pet owners to meet their future furry friends. 🐾How It Works: Visitors can browse through photos of homeless dogs and cats displayed on information boards in any of our 190+ stores in 36 cities across Ukraine. For those ready to welcome a new companion, we offer detailed care consultations and a thoughtful gift box to support pet parents on their journey. 🐾Meet Your New Best Friend: In 25 selected stores, you have the opportunity to meet some of the cats in person, thanks to our dedicated volunteer partners. This interaction enables you to forge a connection and make the life-changing decision to adopt. 🐾 Result: Since the launch of our adoption project in March 2023, we found families for 100 cats by December of the same year. We are happy with these small results and recognize that it's just the beginning of our initiative as we are still fine-tuning the processes. Our ultimate goal is to scale this project, contributing to a lasting solution to the issue of homeless animals in Ukraine.

I am calling EVERYONE OUT on this to do something about this. 7400 killings per day (that number was 5500 only 2 years ago). MORE details in the comment section. FYI EVERYONE! For almost 3 years I have offered 100's of broke animal rescues starving and CRYING for donations... yet they change NOTHING (the living definition of insanity) FREE fundraisers that will actually appeal/give back/REWARD the followers for supporting them growing monthly in revenue for the FOREVER! ALL rescues except 1 in Texas (where I orignially posted this note re: another dog being killed in a shelter) have refused my FREE help. Just shy of the six week countdown to the Round the Clock Rescue Run I want to share (for myself at least) an unprecedented work selfie. Yes I am holding puppies in a baby carrier, as I worked flexibly (enormous thank you to Integrion Consulting and BHP for facilitating this) to be able to foster them until they were old enough to be adopted (there was a third running around somewhere in the background too). This unprecedented moment is as a result of unprecedented challenges facing the Dogs’ Refuge Home (DRH), Shenton Park (echoed at animal refuges globally) with: - Unprecedented numbers of surrenders due to the cost of living crisis. Last Sunday the DRH had ~200 dogs in its care and it managed to find the resources to accept an additional 23 puppies from rural Western Australia. - Unprecedented numbers of domestic animals not being sterilised, with unsterilised surrenders at the DRH increasing from ~44% to ~74% in the past five years. Did you know one unsterilised female dog and her unsterilised litters over a period of 6 years can produce 67,000 unplanned puppies! - Unprecedentedly low adoption to surrender rates. The DRH is a no kill shelter and the only way they can help more dogs is through adoptions. One of its beloved residents has been in the DRH’s care for more than 900 days! - Unprecedented operating expenses (as resources are needing to be spread even more thinly), which will need to be filled by the generosity of the community. - Unprecedented (I hope, but sadly I know I might have embellished the uniqueness of this tragedy) animal mistreatment, with puppies and expectant mum’s being left in rubbish bins with no way to escape unless found by strangers or local Rangers. The DRH has responded to circumstances like this twice in the last month! These ‘unprecedented’ factors are just some of the drivers motivating the Round the Clock Rescue Run, as Willie Richards and I try and raise crucial funds for the DRH. Today is National Rescue Dog Day. So what is the state of rescue today? In 2023, ~400,000 dogs & cats were killed in our nation's shelters. Including 30% more dogs than in 2022. That increase is both staggering & heartbreaking. And the shelter where I volunteer is at capacity for dogs. Thankfully there are specific things you can do to help save lives: - Adopt don't shop. This is the #1 thing you can do. When you buy from a breeder you perpetuate the cycle that animals are commodities & directly increase the number of animals who end up in shelters (and yes, even expensive breeds end up in shelters). - Spay or neuter your pets. This is the #2 thing you can do. If you're adopting your pet from a rescue or shelter, then you'll be good, since most, if not all, won't adopt out an intact animal. Plus, it's healthier for animals to be fixed 🙂 It's a win-win-win! - Get involved. You can adopt, foster, volunteer, donate, and/or educate others about the issues. Everyone can do something to directly help the animals. Just pick the best fit for your lifestyle! For me, it's volunteering every week at the local shelter. In 2016, 1 million dogs & cats were killed in our nation's shelters, so overall, we've made tremendous progress. Together we can save more lives. The Plight of Stray Dogs: More Than Just Street Pups #HelpTheStrays We see them every day, furry nomads navigating the bustling streets or quiet alleys. Stray dogs are a familiar sight, but have we ever stopped to consider their plight? These aren't just wild animals; they're often lost, abandoned, or born into a life of constant struggle. Their days are filled with challenges: * **Finding food and shelter:** Scraps from overflowing bins hardly constitute a balanced diet, and nights are spent huddled in doorways or under parked cars, offering little protection from the elements. * **Exposure to disease:** Without proper care, strays are susceptible to illnesses and injuries that can be life-threatening. * **Fear and loneliness:** The constant fight for survival leaves them wary and withdrawn. Deep down, however, they crave companionship and affection. The truth is, stray dogs are not the problem, they are the victims. Often, the root cause lies in irresponsible pet ownership - abandoned animals or uncontrolled breeding contribute to the overpopulation of strays. Meet Snowy was an owned dog loved by his human family. And because of his love for his family, he instinctively protects them. Recently, a stranger trespassed on their property, and Snowy bravely confronted the intruder. Sadly, the stranger attacked Snowy with a cane knife. Snowy’s family called us and sent a viber video. His shock and distress is clearly visible. They arranged to have Snowy brought into our Animals Fiji Nadi Clinic. Thanks to the owners quick action and our medical team--including volunteer vets from @vetprojectsinternational we were able to get Snowy the surgery and treatment he needed to make a full recovery and sent home. Snowy's tale is more than just his own—it's a powerful reflection of the challenges many animals in Fiji face daily. Some encounter hardships and join the ranks of the country's growing homeless pet population, while others experience abuse right in their own homes. Each story, while often moving, is also a beacon of resilience and a call to compassionate action. This story breaks my heart. I am a dog lover; I often say my 3-year-old "puppy" is my best friend and that humans don't deserve dogs. This story also teaches leadership lessons, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and humility. Because this is likely behind a paywall, here are a few paragraphs. I don't see this story as trust-building, which is important for increasing donations, as noted in the last paragraph I shared. A rebellion has broken open at Indiana’s largest nonprofit animal shelter, pitting former trainers, board members and volunteers against its chief executive officer. The ex-workers at IndyHumane accuse Donna Casamento of abrasive, insular and vindictive leadership that has led to the resignations or firings of nearly 80 people since she was hired 20 months ago, including the chief financial officer, chief development officer, head of human resources and seven board members. Twenty-three of those let go were brought on by Casamento.  As a result, former workers say, dogs are not getting the preparation they need for adoptions and some are being needlessly put down because of behavioral problems.   “It’s a hot mess, toxic,” said John Aleshire, the executive director from 2008 to 2017. “If there is no consistency in staff and low morale, the physical and emotional well-being of the animals suffer. There's a trickle down." … Some of the staff reduction is due to cuts, which Casamento said were needed to eliminate an operating deficit of more than $500,000 for two years straight. The shelter, which relies on donations for 78% of its budget, had $6.9 million in revenue but $7.4 million in expenses in 2022, according to income tax filings. The budget shortfall in 2021 stood at $738,480. At the same time, the shelter has put more emphasis on customer service and outreach in the community, with the goal of increasing donations, Casamento said. https://lnkd.in/g5mY9n7c
