Project Coordinator Naiz Garibay knows that people often assume mining today equates old-school pickaxes, but she’s here to debunk that line of thinking and explain what working at a next-generation mine like Hermosa actually looks like.
“There are way more opportunities and jobs to fulfill, not just being a geologist or engineer, but you can work in health and safety, as community specialists, IT – there are thousands of things that go into a project.”

Have you ever wanted to do a job that really mattered? In this season we look at some big trends and small steps that are changing the future of work so your job of tomorrow can help your community and even the planet. Mining as an industry is thousands of years old. There are even historic time periods named after the medals we've mined, such as the copper, bronze and Iron Ages. But what might mining look like in the future? And what jobs of tomorrow will be needed for the next generation Mine. The next generation minds will also be much, much safer, not just because of automation, but because of all the strides that are being made and the safety sector. And lastly, the next generation mine will also be powered with clean or renewable power. The mining industry actually accounts for a fairly significant amount of greenhouse gas emissions, usually associated with crushing and milling. Corporations and the next generation mine will be using Clean Power to deliver those services so that their environmental footprint is smaller than it is today. A mind's value not only lies in the deposit, but in the operators that keep production going. Next generation mines will certainly need next Gen. minors to do the job in the wider Hermosa group. I work with almost every other team here at Hermosa. We work really close with the geologists. A lot of their inputs from their drilling programs go into our mind plans and so we are constantly updating based on the drilling and the new information that they're gathering. Also working really closely with environmental and permitting. But not all jobs at a next generation mine are technical, and there are vast variety of roles required for the successful operation of a project like Hermosa. When New Year mining, you automatically think geologists, engineers, people out here with pick axes, and that's how we mostly think what it is here at the mining industry. But it's not like that. There's way more opportunities where more jobs to fulfill. Not just being a geologist or an engineer, you can come and do something with the health and safety aspect. You can be community specialists, you can work for it. There's just thousands of things that actually go to in a project.
