Discover how the introduction of National Health Insurance (NHI) is fostering the institutionalization of Health Technology Assessment (HTA) in South Africa! South Africa has mainly used HTA processes for selecting essential medicines, particularly over the past two decades. HTA processes have yet to be incorporated in the same way in decisions for other technologies and interventions such as equipment, health care education, and diagnostics. In this commentary, Janine Jugathpal, Andrew Parrish, Khadija Jamaloodien, Mark Blecher, and Jonatan Davén outline potential strategies for formalizing HTA following the approval of the NHI Bill. The high cost of healthcare services abroad is a major concern for expatriates, frequent travellers, and international employees. To manage these expenses, ensure comprehensive international health insurance covering hospitalization, outpatient care, and emergencies. Encourage preventive care to catch health issues early, utilize telemedicine for non-emergency consultations, and explore medical tourism for affordable treatments. Compare healthcare costs across different regions and establish an emergency fund for unexpected expenses. By implementing these strategies, individuals and businesses can effectively handle the financial challenges of international healthcare. #HealthcareAbroad #MedicalCosts #InternationalHealthInsurance #MedicalTourism #Telemedicine

The movement towards Universal Health Coverage under the National Health Insurance (NHI) scheme highlights the pressing need to bridge existing gaps and dismantle silos between the private and public health sectors. Currently, the system is dualistic and fragmented. Effective integration of these two segments is crucial for achieving equitable and universal access to healthcare services. Without a doubt, this requires fostering collaborative practices, aligning healthcare standards, and implementing interoperable health information systems. I believe by working together, South Africa can ensure a smoother transition towards the NHI, ultimately improving outcomes across all demographics and making comprehensive healthcare a reality for everyone. Since this is a mammoth task, let's take one step at a time.

Healthcare Policy The plans, decisions, actions, and goals that govern the provision and accessibility of healthcare to the public are referred to as "healthcare policy." For instance, policies may include state-imposed safety and legal requirements or procedures governing how medical treatment and medication are given to patients in a particular hospital. Healthcare policy can be implemented nationally and influence healthcare coverage, accessibility, and cost of medication, treatment, and other health-related factors. Global health, public health, health insurance, healthcare services, medicine, and mental health are some of the subcategories under health policy.

Healthcare is hit by inflation just like every other industry and impact on the Egyptians won't get easier. 65% of healthcare expenditure is Out Of Pocket in Egypt with a shy 3~4% adoption of health insurance accounting for ~5% of the total expenditure putting a huge impact with recent pricing hikes on majority of patients and challenging the market dynamics With the high upfront investment healthcare requires and highly competitive landscape , providers and patients alike are searching for solutions to bridge the gap of supple and demand and relocate healthcare expenditure to early stages of diseases detection and treatment rather than late stages of complications management. This was the headlines of المال today and I thought of sharing and highlighting how healthcare is performing in Egypt and what we do in HealthTag - كارت الصحة to empower who cares and bridge this gap by enabling our users to get the care they need at the prices they can afford across wide network of healthcare providers

PAs and NPs are an integral part of the healthcare team. The other day a patient saw me in the urgent care upset that they were seen by an NP and that the NP didn't know anything because the patient was still coughing. Doctors have more training than NPs and PAs but training doesn't mean competence. Competence comes from experience and being humble enough to learn. For every disparaging remark of a PA or NP by a patient or physician there will be one extra patient who will undergo unnecessary testing or referral. We need to support each other as clinicians even if the hospital and health insurance groups try to create this big rift and divide. If we want better health outcomes we need to improve the health literacy of our patient population. That will encourage better questions, more accountability, and is good for everyone involved.

Quality Assurance and Quality Control in clinical medicine. This is a growing niche in healthcare as care delivery is transitioning from physicians to APCs. And from in-person visits to virtual visits. More importantly, many more patients have limited health insurance, limited access, limited language skills, and limited health literacy which makes it more likely that they'll have a poor outcome. A good QAQC program can only be developed if one considers the at-risk population and the nature of the clinicians.

"Digital-In-Health." Attaching a term to something is important for clarity, but it is equally important to continue paying attention to the underlying nuances. Highlighting those nuances is exactly what we did with the "Digital-In-Health" campaign in the medical press over the past few months, together with RIZIV and Agoria. We gave the floor to 9 people representing 6 different stakeholders: the patient, the healthcare provider, the government, the health economist, the health insurance fund, and the industry. How do they view digitally supported healthcare? What do they see as its greatest value? And where do they see the biggest challenges? You can discover their respective perspectives here: 👉 In Dutch: https://lnkd.in/eW3qvxpx 👉 In French: https://lnkd.in/e2BfDsW3 🙏 A big thank you to RIZIV (extra kudos to the communications team) for making time for this campaign amid all the other important projects. To Reflexion Medical Network for bringing the stories to screens and paper. And to Agoria for helping to raise awareness about the importance of digital health for Belgian healthcare.
