Gold miners have underperformed gold bullion in the market for most of the last year. Our Materials Analyst Martin Pradier, MBA, CFA, was on BNN Bloomberg to explain that the miners are underperforming due to cost increases. "The problem is cost," Martin said. "Over the last year, costs for the 10 miners I follow went up 9%. What is worse, in the last quarter, costs went up 18%, so there was an acceleration in the cost increases."  "When I look at the miners last year, the ones that did better [by share price] were the ones that were better able to control costs," he said. "There was a very strong correlation." Martin said his Top Picks in gold companies are Wheaton Precious Metals Corp. and Lundin Gold Inc. Wheaton is a gold streamer rather than a miner, meaning it is not exposed to cost increases. "Lundin Gold is one of the most efficient producers," he said. "It has very low costs. It is in Ecuador and has just one mine, but it's finding a lot more gold." Since 2010 the gold price has increased +250%, recently maintaining levels above A$3,000/oz. The S&P ASX gold index (XGD) on the other hand has diverged resulting in only a 27% increase during the same period. Record high gold prices have resulted in strong cash generation for producers.
