A few years ago the mining mobile equipment OEMs were all announcing there autonomous mining technology, which now is becoming almost the normal for many!! Now its all about the alternative and green energy sources, and how to keep the equipment moving particularly trucks so they do not have to stop for charging if they have batteries, and to generally use electric power. A new solution announced by Caterpillar, similar to other options being developed by others, and there will be a few more similar announcements in the coming weeks (& months) by other OEMs as the mining industry continues to strive to be a better user of energy. https://lnkd.in/g-vquKYF

Today, we launch the Materialize program to decarbonize the supply chain of the mining, metals, and minerals (MMM) sector. The program is our next collaborative cohort based decarbonization program, bringing together MMM companies on a pre-competitive basis to find solutions for their common supply chain. While I'm proud of all of our cohort programs, I find this one to be especially significant and important, given the increasing demand for raw materials throughout our economy - demand that is only predicted to accelerate in the coming decades as a result of the energy transition. Nearly $475 million is being allocated to clean energy initiatives led by companies such as Freeport-McMoRan, Barrick Gold, and Newmont, targeting projects throughout the US. These projects include solar, microgrids, pumped storage hydropower, geothermal, and battery energy storage systems, aimed at accelerating the transition to greener energy while revitalizing former coal mining areas. Projects range from geothermal and battery energy storage in Arizona to solar and hydroelectric facilities in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, fostering job creation and economic development in regions facing energy transition challenges. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to decarbonize mining operations, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen America's energy security.
