At the Inaugural WiMSA Symposium today, keynote speaker, Dr Nompumelelo Obokoh - CEO, South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) spoke of the spirit of Imbokodo - "You strike a woman, you strike a rock!" in her presentation, "A Woman's Multifaceted Journey in Mining." She noted that despite the fact that the mining industry is still male dominated, women must not forget that "We are the rocks, the unbreakable forces that shape the future". Women have begun to "carve out" spaces for themselves, "not only as participants, but as leaders, as innovators and change makers". Women must constantly prove themselves and managing professional and personal responsibilities is a balancing act - "when you look at the multifaceted nature of our journey as women, we wear many hats. We are mothers and we have to be leaders. We are expected also to be nurturers, to be advocates and to be warriors. We navigate a landscape that is often unyielding. So in this journey, solidarity is key. Colleagues, we must continue to lift each other up. We must create spaces where our voices continue to be heard, and we must mentor the next generation of women in industry. Our journey is multifaceted, and yes, it is also one of triumph and possibilities. Let us continue to walk this path with the strength and resilience that defines us. Let us continue to be that rock, continue to be unshakable, continue to be unstoppable. #WiMSA #MiningMatters #Mining #Innovation #Mining #WomenInMining

⛏️ Leadership roles are growing for women in the mining industry. 📽️ A recent video from 7News found over 70% of the 30 new apprentices joining BHP Mitsubishi Alliance in Queensland's coalfields are female. 🙅 The video attracted some negative reactions from men online who claimed it reflected an equal opportunity agenda. That is despite a recent study by BHP that showed inclusive and diverse teams “outperform other teams on safety, productivity and culture”. 💪 While these women were applying for entry level roles, many will be looking to turn the opportunity into a career, and pursue leadership positions, which is a trend that is being witnessed across the entire sector. 👷♀️ According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, over the last two decades, the number of women employed full-time in mining nationally jumped from 8,700 in August 2002 to 45,000 in August 2022, with women now making up about 16% of overall employees in mining. 👉 Read the article on the video here: https://loom.ly/y1XKEEo 👉🏼 Read about the rise of leadership roles for women in mining: https://loom.ly/ByG3cbo 👉🏾 Are you interested in developing your leadership skills? While there have been modest gains in recent years, women still occupy a relatively small percentage of executive and board positions. Leadership Statistics: 👉 Women fill 12.1% of C-suite positions in global publicly traded mining companies, up 1.6 percentage points since 2021. 👉 14% of all executive positions are held by women, an increase of 1.7 percentage points. 👉 Women comprise 12.3% of board roles, up 4.3 percentage points. Regional Differences: 👉 Women hold 30.9% of executive positions in Middle East and African mining companies. 👉 Latin American and Caribbean companies have the lowest representation, with women holding 11.2% of executive roles. Industry Workforce: 👉 Women make up about 16% of the total US mining workforce, compared to 46.8% of the total US labor pool. Benefits of Diversity: 👉 Improved financial results 👉 Better environmental performance 👉 Enhanced safety outcomes 👉 Increased creativity and innovation Future Outlook: 👉 Increasing interest from senior leadership in improving diversity 👉 Growing recognition of the business benefits of diverse leadership 👉 Slow but steady progress being made in the industry Whilst progress is being made, there is still significant room for improvement in gender diversity within the metals and mining sector. At the #WIMASummit2024, Humphrey Simba MCIPS, CPSP (T) - Authorised, Director of Supply Chain Advisory at ASNL Advisory Limited, shared profound insights on fostering inclusiveness in the mining sector and enhancing women's participation in this industry. Creating a truly inclusive mining sector entails opening doors for both men and women. It's essential to recognize that even among male workers, the mining environment is physically demanding and not suited for everyone. To enhance leadership within the sector, we must prioritize inclusivity by developing facilities within mines that accommodate women workers. But how can women actively engage in the mining sector across different domains? 1. Leadership in Mining: Assessing the roles of women professionals within the sector is crucial. Are they predominantly in core mining positions or administrative roles? 2. Participation in the Value Chain: Looking into the extent of women's involvement in various aspects of the mining value chain, such as procurement, engineering support, contracting, and other key functions. 3. Ownership and Shareholding: Understanding the representation of women as shareholders in mining companies is essential for gauging their overall participation and influence in decision-making processes. By examining these three categories, we can gain valuable insights into how women can actively participate and thrive in the mining sector, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse industry landscape. #WIMA2024 #WIMASummit2024

Happy Friday Ladies! So… what’s on the agenda for 2024? According to the International Labour Organization (#ILO) in 2018, it’s mooting the 1935 Convention 45 this year - that barred women from working underground at any mine (1) #womeninmining Great! But how would another “OK” for women TO SIMPLY BE in the mining industry comfort you? …It means you are not the only voice – there is a global choir. #ForgeYourFutureFearlessly The Mineral Council of South Africa (#MCSA) openly declares: “Women in the South African mining industry face a range of challenges – some shared by their male counterparts and many that are theirs alone… women working in the industry should have the same opportunities open to them as men – and must be safe to pursue them.” (2) Though their last survey shows that only 12% of people in the SA #miningindustry is represented by women, the #MCSA isn’t oblivious to the #challengesandopportunities. There is an active and supported call to address #safety, to adapt equipment, to fast-forward #modernization in mining methods, and (centrally) for #genderbasedviolence and discrimination to be clenched. The International Woman in Mining (#IWiM) organization published the MCSA report, saying “physical strength will become less important than fine motor skills, dexterity and problem-solving abilities. This shift will create significant opportunities for women in the industry.” (3) In 2022, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, at the 13th Annual Women in Mining Conference (#WiMSA), included the following key challenges, “that prevent women from entering the mining and mineral value chain:” · Gender bias · Lack of information on existing opportunities · Poor or limited networking opportunities · Inadequate role models, · Lack of business skills and education. At Dayenu Mining Consultants, Natalie Roos and Anna-Marie Oliver have spouses who currently work underground - though they are no strangers to the UG paradigm themselves. Natalie (16 years in Mining) says, “The mining industry has taught me a lot of skills and knowledge - but consulting has given me the opportunity to use it.” Anna-Marie (who you may know from our #skillsgap post) says her job is to create job opportunities – not only by underground mine-planning – but by adhering to the goal of trying to increase the quality of life for existing communities. Ladies, each voice counts. We wish you a prosperous 2024. Be #determinedtosucceed. Be #proud. Be #ambitious. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- References: (1 ) https://lnkd.in/dY3KEA7a (2) https://lnkd.in/gq9Wqz7 (3) https://lnkd.in/d_HPzmgK
