One less covered aspect of the war in South Lebanon is the use of psychological warfare and its impact on Lebanon's population. The daily mock raids, sonic booms, loud buzzing and constant presence of fighter jets and military drones are a reminder that people are not safe and are meant for people not to feel safe. Michelle Eid and Jad El Dilati wrote a very compelling piece on the topic for The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy. "“The main point behind psychological warfare is the show of power: telling citizens that ‘at any moment, we can attack you.’ As such, people in Lebanon live under a constant, normalized condition of hyperstimulation and anxiety, subconsciously waiting for something to happen at any given moment,” Dr. Sheehi pointed out. She also explained that the understanding of psychological warfare within the framework of mainstream psychology does not apply in this case: “People living in Lebanon do not suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), since they are still living under the threat of an attack at any given time. As of 2024, it is estimated that russia has used over 10,000 drones in its military operations in Ukraine. This includes a mix of reconnaissance, surveillance, and attack drones, with a significant number being kamikaze drones like the Shahed-136. The use of drones has been a prominent feature of the conflict, with russia deploying them in large numbers to conduct strikes, gather intelligence, and support ground operations. Ukraine has served as a proving ground for the latest anti-drone technologies, including electronic warfare systems, laser interception systems, and kinetic interceptors. Many countries and companies have seized the opportunity to test their developments in real combat conditions to assess their effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
