Last week, Wayfair's CEO told employees to "work harder." Today, Wayfair lays off 13% due to "overhiring and slowing demand". If you believed what was said last week, you would think "Man, if I only worked harder, I wouldn't be laid off." Lies. If you know the truth, you would know "Layoffs are business decisions. The reasons publicly stated are sometimes true, sometimes not. Since I don't own the firm, I don't control their decisions. I control me. Therefore, I do great work in their employment door, but always stay ready to walk through a new employment door at all times. I will never count on jobs that aren't mine at firms I don't own more than I count on and believe in me." That's the truth. I'm pretty upset about Wayfair and the narrative it's trying to land regarding the performance of remote workers to justify its layoffs. Actually, I was so worked up, Jenny Calvert said "why don't we record our daily catch-up today". -> What is frustrating is a CEO who hot potato'd accountability to his team. How do the people left trust? -> What upsets me off is this large cohort of employees who now think they did something wrong. How do they re-write their story to take back their power? -> What really worries me is you know other executives are watching and waiting to see what they can get away with next. Is this setting a new precedent? Let us know what you think. #leadershipimpact #layoffs #wayfair #hottakes #accountabilitymatters #careerstrategy

Dedicated servant leader experienced in organizational management with a focus on driving results through industry leading diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
The volume of individuals who have contacted me expressing their need for assistance in securing new employment due to financial constraints preventing them from working part-time or facing termination is quite significant. Implementing policies that require employees to reduce their hours or resign in order to avoid providing proper severance packages is not a sound business practice. It is particularly unfair to place this burden on those who are in direct contact with customers and receive lower compensation, ultimately forcing them to choose between their livelihood and their families' well-being. When a company resorts to cutting costs by laying off lower-level employees instead of addressing issues at the management level, it demonstrates a lack of foresight and a sense of desperation that will undoubtedly have negative effects on the company's bottom line. It is evident that Wayfair is facing difficult times. To those who were affected by the recent layoffs in the BDR, OD, and enterprise departments, please reach out to me or the discord for support. For those who are facing the difficult decision of resigning due to insufficient hours, do not hesitate to seek assistance from the discord. We are here to help!

And the white collar layoffs beat goes on. Macy’s yesterday, Wayfair today. Not only laggards are shedding. The Luxury Institute called this in late 2022 and told you it would not stop at Big Tech and FinTech. That’s because The Luxury Institute, LLC has exclusive global networks of HNW and UHNW SuperClients and global luxury executive members who hinted that most companies were/are bloated and had hired for a different trajectory of growth that was in the rear view mirror. This will continue well into 2024. Most companies have not adapted for the new reality. In a fragile economy you have to assess/adapt for risk. And that’s not even factoring in negative Black Swan events. In 2024, expect great performance from luxury brands across all categories to be the exception, not the rule. And even that may not extend to year end. Maybe the Central Banks drop rates by a lot. Doubtful. If your luxury brand is not developing truly innovative products/services/experiences, you lose. If you are not investing in associates who are mastering Expertise, Empathy, Trustworthiness, Kindness, powered by Human Creativity, you lose. Life is luck and skill. In 2024, High Performance with High Trust rules. Those are SKILLS.

It's so disheartening to hear about the recent Wayfair layoffs. To those affected, please know that you're not alone and your wayfair alum are here to support. Take this as an opportunity to reassess your career goals and take some time for yourself. I am here for all the coffee chats, resume / LinkedIn reviews, or introductions🙋🏼♀️♥️ Some tips that helped me navigate a similar time last year: 1. Use this as a chance to take a break and reflect on what you really want in your career. 2. Update your resume to remove any Wayfair-specific language. 3. Update your LinkedIn profile / headline (you'll likely do this MANY times). 4. Reach out to your network and set up coffee chats. 5. Ask for introductions to new contacts and potential job opportunities. 6. Reconnect with former bosses, team members, and industry suppliers (think of all those home / furniture brand relationships). 7. Make a list of pros and cons for your next role, and identify your strengths and areas of opportunity. Remember, this is a difficult time, but it's also an opportunity to take control of your career and find your next great opportunity✨

This is a case study in poor management with a complete lack of accountability for their actions and compassion and empathy for those their actions impact. Can we all please learn from this and commit to being better; better leaders, colleagues, and humans? #work #worklifebalance #humanityfirst #compassion #empathy
Wayfair is laying off 1,650 employees, amounting to 13% of its global workforce, as the online home goods retailer struggled to rebound following its success amid pandemic lockdowns. CEO Niraj Shah, who recently went viral for telling his employees to work harder, said in an open letter posted Friday that Wayfair “went overboard in hiring during a strong economic period,” referencing 2020 when online shopping spiked, sparking a “dramatic surge” in demand that doubled Wayfair’s sales to $18 billion. A few years later, its fortunes have changed, with Shah writing that mid-2022 “was clear we were in a bust period” and Wayfair implementing rounds of layoffs in 2022 and 2023. “I believe we need to stay focused as a company on what committed small teams can accomplish,” Shah wrote Friday. “In many ways, having too many great people is worse than having too few.”

Amidst white-collar job layoffs at Wayfair, echoing trends at tech giants like Amazon and Google, it prompts reflection on improving communication of such news. My advice: align all communications with the overarching business strategy. In December, a widely circulated internal memo from the CEO encouraged heightened effort, emphasizing success does not result from 'laziness'. It's difficult to believe that the recent layoffs were unforeseen in December. Either a miraculous business turnaround was anticipated, or these job cuts were known at the time. If the latter, was the 'beatings will continue until morale improves' memo necessary? The crux is that every communication, whether internal or external, should contribute to a defined business objective. What was the strategic purpose of instructing the entire organization to intensify their efforts? If underperformance is an issue at Wayfair, alternative tools are available besides a sweeping warning to employees, potentially sparing the company's reputation from an avoidable blow. In hierarchical structures, communication professionals face challenges in providing candid counsel to superiors, including the CEO. However, by posing thoughtful questions, we can guide the message and tactics toward a more positive direction directly linked to the underlying business needs. #messaging #internalcommunications #reductions #reputationmanagement
