MPS has launched a new paid teacher apprenticeship program in collaboration with North Branch Area Public Schools, Owatonna Public Schools, Minnesota State University, Mankato and the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. Last week, we celebrated the kickoff of this innovative program and welcomed our first cohort of 25 soon-to-be licensed educators. MPS Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams had some inspiring words for the group, saying “You all are pioneers… I’m really excited for you.” The Forward Together program creates an accessible pathway into teaching, ensuring that new educators are well-prepared to make a positive impact from day one. C-BEN is excited to partner with Tennessee Grow Your Own Center Your Own and iDesign to leverage competency-based approaches that can address the teacher shortage. Over the course of the next year, faculty and staff from the UT System and its network of partner institutions will collaborate with CBEN and iDesign to create and deliver 16 modules to offer a fully-online teacher training program and make it available to students in rural, urban and suburban districts across the state. C-BEN Solutions Executive Vice President, Lisa McIntyre-Hite, Ph.D., shared, “In 2023, nearly 9 in 10 public school districts struggled to hire teachers, with high-poverty districts facing significant understaffing. By focusing on competencies, we can unlock flexible pathways to the profession and address the shortage to ensure our nation's learners have highly qualified teachers in the classroom." 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dWjtA-Tf

William Penterman, a legislator from Wisconsin, has introduced a new bill aimed at addressing the educator shortage by establishing a teacher apprenticeship program. This proposed legislation seeks to revolutionize the pathway for aspiring educators by introducing a "2+2" model, allowing individuals to teach after completing two years of general studies followed by two years of specialized training. Currently, prospective teachers are required to undergo a four-year education program along with an additional semester of student teaching to obtain their teaching license. The proposed bill could potentially streamline the process and offer alternative routes to licensure. Across the nation, teacher apprenticeship initiatives have garnered backing from both sides of the aisle. In July 2023, the Biden administration disclosed the availability of over $65 million through the U.S. Department of Labor to support teacher apprenticeship programs across states.
