Got Your Number ESPN personality (Get Up and #Greeny) and New York Times bestselling author Mike Greenberg partners with mega-producer Hembo to settle once and for all which legends flat-out own which numbers. In short essays certain to provoke debate between and amongst all generations, Greeny uses his lifetime of sports knowledge to spin yarns of the legends among the legends and tell you why some have claimed their spot in the top 100 of all time. Sports and numbers go hand in hand. Sports and loud, assertive debate? Even better. Cheering on, agonizing over, and being in plain awe of your favorite players has left you with a deep and intricate memory of their greatness, not to mention well-honed arguments as to why your favorites are really the best. In arenas, in front of your TV, and in bars, you’ve debated friends and strangers alike. You’ve joyfully mocked your friends’ (sometimes laughable) favorites. You’ve spouted accomplishments, statistics: Yours won six titles, batted .350 in the clutch, or generated 82% of their team’s scoring. But not all numbers are created equal. Some are accomplishments. Others are identity. Looming large over any image you have of an athlete: the number on their jersey. Numbers often provide the most visceral parts of any sports legend’s identity. They are what people remember—worldwide. Jordan, Jeter, Brady—to fans, they are as much their number as they are anything else. Sure, 1 through 100 might seem like a large range, but fierce competition across the ages has blessed only a lucky few to claim one of these as their own. For some, the victors may not be so obvious. That’s why Greeny’s here to help. Ascend into discussion, fans of all stripes. Come away enlightened. Or maybe a little enraged. Either way, you are sure to be occasionally surprised—and endlessly entertained. Whatever your sport, welcome to the place where all the arguments are finally decided, once and for all. https://lnkd.in/gNGa5rBt

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁? As we anticipate the spectacle of Mike Tyson stepping into the ring against Jake Paul, there's more to talk about than who wins. This event, marked by a staggering 30-year age gap between the competitors, asks us to question the very fabric of competitive sports and entertainment. 1️⃣ The age gap: There is a profound question to be asked: Should we allow fights with a 30 year age difference? This isn't merely a question of physical capability but touches on the ethical considerations of sportsmanship and the duty of sports organizations to ensure fair, safe competition. What are the implications for the sport, and where should we draw the line? 2️⃣ Motivations behind the match: What drives such a contest? Is it the thrill of competition, the pursuit of pride, the shadows of ego, or the lure of financial gain? Each motivation speaks volumes about the current state of professional sports and entertainment, reflecting a society that is increasingly blurring the lines between genuine competition and spectacle. 3️⃣ The role of the audience. Perhaps the most introspective question of all: Is the event itself more concerning, or is it our collective decision to watch it that truly deserves scrutiny? This speaks to the broader role of consumer demand in shaping the landscape of sports and entertainment. Are we, as an audience, complicit in promoting contests that may prioritize spectacle over safety and integrity? I don't have clear answers for this but I feel as if this fight is a mirror reflecting our collective psyche – what we value, what entertains us, and what we are willing to overlook. Let's use this moment as an opportunity for reflection and dialogue. #SportsEthics #Boxing #TysonVsPaul #CulturalReflection *Imagine generated by Midjourney

A very smart and creative way to brand in the event in the sports industry
When we started to map out the incredible roster behind the inaugural ATHLOS NYC, we knew we needed the right incentives to motivate *and* celebrate these athletes so it was worth their time to show up. We tackled this from all angles: 💰 $60k top prize, the most ever given out for a female-only track event 🏆 Silver Status accreditation by World Athletics 👑 Bespoke crowns designed by Tiffany & Co. 🎶 Musical performance by Megan Thee Stallion The result? An exhilarating experience that can genuinely compete with some of the iconic sports events in NYC. I discussed our approach more on the "Ready Set Go" podcast with Justin Gatlin ↓

March Madness is the NCAA's bread and butter. And one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year. The business behind the NCAA is more fascinating than you can imagine 👇 In 2022 - 2023, the NCAA did $1.28B in revenue. $1B of that came from March Madness. And the men's division 1 basketball accounted for roughly $900M of that. That includes media rights, merchandise licensing, ticket sales, and corporate sponsorships. Over just three weeks. Astonishing. But the games aren't just a revenue generator within the collegiate ecosystem. In 2023, an estimated $15.5B was wagered on the tournament, according to reports from the American Gaming Association. Across just 68 million Americans. March Madness also has a ripple effect on host cities. Significantly impacting small businesses. For example, a traditional first four host can expect to earn $66M, while a final four host can earn up to $300M. Which is a significant injection for any city 💰 And accounting for this year's Clarkonomics, courtesy Caitlin Clark, the numbers could expectedly be much larger. I believe March Madness is a significant contender to be the biggest sporting event in the US. The Super Bowl is still a bigger revenue generator than March Madness – but not by much. For what is essentially an amateur sports event, that is nothing short of incredible 💪 Who are your March Madness picks for 2024? 🏀 #sportsbiz #marchmadness #ncaa #caitlinclark #sportsindustry

Does the business world over-use sports metaphor and analogy? I'm as competitive and sports-centric as they come. I dedicated my life to basketball all the way into college, worked in #sportsbusiness for years, and I'm a season-ticket-holder for my favorite college football team. And yet, I'm wondering if we over-use sports terms in business. I know I use them a lot! But sports are zero-sum games. There's a winner and a loser. Business, however, isn't that black and white. It's so much more complex, and winning can simultaneously occur - even for the staunchest of competitive rivals. Joan Magretta writes in her work that the performing arts may be a better analogy. "There can be many good singers or actors - each outstanding and successful in a distinctive way. Each finds and creates an audience." Industries are so much more complex than just one winner and one loser. Curious what y'all think! #competitivestrategy #businessdiscussion
