Battery manufacturing is nearly at the required level, showing significant progress in clean energy technology production. ☀️ Intriguing new developments are revolutionizing the solar power industry as we pivot towards an energy landscape dominated by sun power, assisted by wind power and innovative energy storage technologies. ✔️ Solar energy continues its impressive growth, having installed double the generation capacity in 2023 compared to all other generation technologies combined. ✔️ Advancements in energy storage solutions, such as pumped hydro energy storage (PHES), and modern demand management systems are helping to tide over the inherently intermittent nature of solar power. ✔️ A combination of short-term battery storage systems and large-scale PHES could provide a flexible, economically viable power storage solution. Solar power's progress doesn't show signs of slowing down, evident from the doubled installation of generation capacity in 2023, dwarfing the combined accomplishments of other technologies. However, how to store the sun's energy efficiently and effectively, remain pertinent challenges. PHES, providing more than 90% of total energy storage globally, alongside burgeoning technologies such as batteries, are pushing boundaries. In places where fossil fuel power plants are closing, large-scale storage mechanisms like PHES are crucial. Hybrids of batteries and PHES are emerging as commendable solutions, where batteries address short-term storage and PHES caters to large energy storage needs. Looking at costs, it's significant to note that the capital cost of PHES varies, being extremely affordable at some sites. Moreover, identifying ideal PHES sites based on certain parameters is vital. Solar power is swiftly becoming not just a contributor, but a prominent player in our energy equation.
